This is on my 1965 Barracuda, 273 V-8, basically stock/originalish. Am I missing something? Should there be a star washer in there?

I disconnected the ground at the battery when I was working under the dash, then had trouble getting it to start. Had to wiggle the ground cable. (that was easy, it was the only thing in the starting system I'd messed with. After a few episodes of that, and noticing that the cable did wiggle within the battery terminal, I took the cable off, cleaned up both ends, reattached the terminal, then put it back in. But I neglected to pay close attention to how it had been attached to the engine. I put it together as in the first picture, with the cable between the cable and the cone washer.

I've still had some trouble, and sometimes have to wiggle the engine end of the cable. So today I moved the cable to between the cone washer and the nut. It started right up, but the problem was intermittent.

I probably need a new cable, but even then I should put it together correctly. The parts and service manuals don't show it. Is there a "correct" way? That cable terminal is getting sucked into the cone of the washer, and that doesn't seem right, but what do I know?

The ground cable shoul be mounted on the last intake bolt on the right side of the intake manifold.

You've got that cone washer on backwards. The convex side faces the nut, the concave side faces the manifold.
Put the ground cable between the nut and the washer.

The outside exhaust manifolds screw into water jackets and usually have sealer on them providing a poor ground path.

This^^^^^

The ground is in the incorrect spot and that washer is backwards. I "believe" that ground attaches to the cylinder head, but I'm not 100% sure. It certainly does NOT attach to the manifold stud.

This reminds me of a strange case. Lady owner had a Mustang she claimed was possessed. Starts fine until it decides not to. It had been towed in more than once. Service manager got a kick out of putting these things on me after his higher schooled and paid had failed. Anyway,,, toothed washer was between engine block and battery cable lug. Were they all assembled this way? Maybe. Only the points of the toothed washed were digging into paintto make contact Maybe this block got heavier black paint than most. I scrubbed a spot at the bolt hole to bare metal. Cable lug against that, then toothed washer and bolt. Ofcourse the lug wanted to turn with tightening. Meter showed zero resistance. I promised Eddie this one wouldn't be back for the same reason.

I think this is your answer, right within the last post link by Professor Fate.

The best ground scenario is direct to the block. A timing cover bolt would be a good ground & use a star washer.

Thanks for the input, and the link to the previous thread. I don't have a hole on the front of my head, but there's an open one on the front of the intake manifold, so I'll move it there.

Generally, anything really hot, like exhaust, is a really bad place for anything electrical. Part of the reason is heat, part is that bolts may become frozen
