I just picked up a 318 motor and tranny to eventually build and transplant into my '68 Barracuda. My car has a nice 318 with a mild build on it in there right now that works perfect. Thing is, it's a motor from the mid '70's. Don't know why, just know I want a 1968 motor in my 1968 'cuda. Which brings us back to the motor I just got. The date on the block is 11-30-67.

Not the best pic, but hey, its a motor that's been sitting a long time

Came out of a running '68 Valiant at least 10 years ago and was stored outside under cover - never rained or snowed on Turns freely. Still has normal looking and smelling oil in it. Has power steering pump (still full), intake, air cleaner assy. and starter. No dizzy, ex. mans, or 2 barrel carb and linkage. Oh, also came with a functional 904 still attached. I paid $200.

Questions:

Good deal?

Heads are 675's - Anything special? I know they're the small valves.
Book says 318's from this year had 9.2 compression. That'd be nice since my current mid '70s probably has 8.2 at best. Is this true or a factory exageration? Are they still better than the 593's on the motor I'm running now?

Is it a drop in? Is the tranny?

Thanks in advance Gurus of the sacred Mopar Esoteric Knowledge:prayer:

The 675's were the standard head used on 318's I don't think there is enough difference in the to 318's to warrant the change as far a performance wise. But if it means that much to you to have the 68 in there than do it. It's your money and car 200.00 is a fair price for a good rebuildable core.

Having a date coded engine is cool.......But i don't think there's ever been a stock 318, once measured, that ever came near 9.0 to 1 compression.

If it helps you to sleep at night knowing that the code on the side of the engine that no one can see indicates that this is the correct year, but not the correct VIN engine for your car, go for it.

I don't tell people how to spend their money as long as they don't tell me how to spend mine.

I know a 68 318 was 230hp stock,where as a say..73 was about 180 stock.Abit more hp may perform better.

230 HP was SAE gross, 180 was SAE net. Apples and oranges.

From a performance standpoint, there's no significant difference other than the mid 70's possibly having stronger connecting rods.

I'm not sure?? at what date they went from the small to large TQ register in the crank, if you are using a TF?

If you are using a stick, the pilot bore may not only be undersize OD, but not DEEP enough.
