Know anything about welders?

I havn't welded anything since high school (my kids have kids now) and I really want to learn how to do it.

I have the opportunity to purchase a "like new" Lincon 110 volt.
it is the largest 110 they make. It comes with:

-cart
-helmet
-shielded gas
-a roll of wire
-gas bottle
-all regulators and hose
-gloves

The wire came on the welder when it was new (last year) so it has only about 30 minutes of welding time on it. Doesn't even have a scratch.
All I need it for is patch panels, and subframe connectors.

I can get it for $550.

I know SQUAT about welders! Is this a good deal?

I don't know a lot either, but I do know Lincoln is a mainstay of the industry, very good products. You can't go wrong with them. Parts are available everywhere too (things like tips and wire and whatever you may need). I bought a small Lincoln Handy Welder for $200. It only has 4 settings which is a little limited, but it works good and is built well.

It all depends on what model it is. I have a Lincoln 3200HD and it's 120v. I paid $450 for it. The gas bottle alone cost me over $100 and I still had to get it filled. Does it come with two bottles or one? Cause you have shielded gas and then gas bottle?

It doesn't sound like a bad deal if everything is all new.

I have a Lincoln SP125, bought it about 8 years ago? $750 Cdn new, by the time I added the regulator, bottle, etc., it probably doubled, mind you the auto dimmer helmets have come way down in price since then. You didn't say it it's an auto dimmer, that is a must, you'll go crazy trying to use a flip down helmet when welding sheetmetal, you don't get to pull a bead like you would arc welding unless you want to buckle the hell out of your panel :cussing: It's a great little welder for sheet metal, I must have a thousand hours on mine.

I'm going to get an auto dimmer from harbor freight.

I have a lincoln 140 and it is great. Whatever you do. Don't get a harbor freight auto dimmer. spend an extra $50 for a jackson or miller helmet. much better quality for an auto dimmer.

I also have the 3200 HD, bought complete kit from a local Home Depot, opened the box and found that the plastic knob used to adjust the regulator was missing, the bolt was there, just not the knob, called Lincoln, they overnighted a complete regulator and guages to me and had it the next day. Nothing but good to say about Lincoln. Paid around $500.00 for everything except bottle.
Welded in patches in both quarters, trunk extensions, and numerous small repairs. Not a single problem, wouldn't recommended any welding repairs on an earthmover, but for a busy hobbyist in the garage with light guage welding, I say 2 thumbs up.
FWIW, relative cheaped out for a generic harbor freight type, by the time he upgraded to gas, had similar costs involved and does not come close in duty cycle, meaning length of time you can weld continuously. Nothing but problems, here you get what you pay for.

Thanks for the warm fuzzy feeling everyone. Looks like it saved me $100 or so. I am buying it off a good friend so we are trying not to poke each other in the eye. He got 220 installed and wants to upgrade and I have alot of patch panels to put in.

You should be good with that. I have a Sears welder. I don't know who made it for Sears, but it is nice and will work for me and my patch panels.
