Lay down Sally...

-
So now we move into day three. Sadly I must return to work today so I will have to work on the car as time permits. I was hoping to have the engine fired up by last night but once we got it in and bolted down we pretty much we exhausted. On a Magnum swap like this with a stock style flexplate you have to waller out one of the mounting holes for the converter. I did that but I ended having to do another one and that took to long to figure out. The headers are being a royal pain too, can't see a way to fit the drivers side on with our cutting something. More research. So right now I'm making a list of everything I've taken off and need to get done before I can get it to fire.

Alright headers are on. Sad part is I had to pull the engine back out to do so. Now I read about every thread about headers and I came to the conclusion that my easist wat was to pull it back out and lay the header down on the steering arm and slide the engine back in. Not super fun but made it a ton simple. Now to just start bolting things back together.

Headers are installed with gaskets, plugs are in, new rev limiter is installed and wired, main crank pulley torqued down, and started wired up temperature and oil pressure gauges. This is what I got done last night. I have today off so it's going to be a thrash and grind day. Really want to get it fired up.

Just do not get in a hurry that is when mistakes happen.

So today did not go as planned. Started installing the inspection plate and the starter. The starter does not fit. Supposedly a "Mini" starter, I had the take a plastic extension off to fit it in-between the headers and steering. Once I got it up into the hole, none of the bolt holes lined up. It was hitting a bit on the block and I did hit it with a Dremel but still no dice. Spent about 4 hours under it trying to get it to work but nothing. Went to the parts store and got a new starter for a 97 dakota, sounds like they may be a bit smaller. Hopefully this will fix it.

So new starter worked. I didn't get a pic of the differences between what I had and what I got. But it was a bit lighter and was about half an inch thinner. Attached is the one I got just in case anyone else needs it. Got it wired. Put the distributor in and got it wired, ran the plug wires, hooked up the coil, resealed the water pump and bolted it up. Made some trick wire separators out of zip ties. Got a problem with the drivers side header hitting the steering coupler. It's not really binding and you can turn the wheels lock to lock. Anyone every clearance one or have any ideas?

Ran new fuel lines to pump, hooked up the vacuum booster and master cylinder, power steering pump bolted up and lines ran, had to paint brackets, had the replace the original alternator and then the replacement one had a stripped bolt hole, radiator in, lower hose hooked up and transmission lines hooked up. Getting closer to firing it up.

Looks good Tony. The only thing I would do is get rid of that plastic fuel filter as they can crack and leak gas. A car buddy of mine, his corvette burnt to the ground from one of those plastic fuel filter's breaking.

Thanks bud, yikes well definitely do not want that. Have a recommendation for a fuel filter? I did tuck it up on to the fender lip.

Your welcome Tony. Sure don't want to see your nice ride go up in smoke like my buddies vette did.

Well getting closer. Got the new alternator in and hooked up. belts ran, hoses are getting hooked up. Fan and shroud in. Gotta figure out way to run one of the heater hoses, doesn't seem to have a home on the new intake. Got the carb on and started hooking it up. Think I gotta have a new air cleaner. But still need to get the battery tray and battery in. Finish plumbing the carb and get the throttle cable and kick down linkage hooked up.

You need the fitting for the intake for the heater hose Mancini sells them.

So getting things buttoned up. Ran the fuel line up up to the carb. Finished the last bit of wiring. Filled with oil and started to fill with coolant but found a small leak and need more coolant.

Problem with the heater hose is the hole in the manifold is to small to fit the size hose. Its a 1/4 hole, I tried using a step up bushings but still cant get it big enough to fit the hose. I got the nipple off the of the old manifold and there's one hole it fits on the new one but it's makes the heater hose kink trying to get to it and that's where temp gauges sending unit is currently at. Any ideas of how to do it? The picture is with everything swapped right now. The sending unit is sitting in the small hole but don't fit, maybe a step up bushing could work there. The heater hose, maybe get a longer bit of hose and run it there. Not sure, it doesn't look very good crossing the manifold like that.

Move the fitting to the passenger side. Drill and tap the hole larger. 5 minuate job with the intake off.

So have been trying to start the new engine. When I crank it over, it sounds like the starter is grinding. I pull it and reset it. Still does it. It is engaging the teeth it appears. Have not gotten under it and had someone crank it. Bad starter maybe? Or something I am missing?

I was going to recommend you pull it and reset. Sounds like the same thing I had happen a couple of times. I have to hold my mini-starter up tight and flat while I'm tightening the bolts. The drive gear was hitting the flywheel and not engaging.

Engine runs!

Had a bit of trouble, it wouldn't start and back fired through the carb. I figured it was 180 out so I flipped the distributor. Guessed on the timing and BOOM. She fired right up. Watch the video!

She goes....And goes good! It's a totally different car with this new engine. I got her out for two shake down runs today.
