So, i have been trying to find a issue where my converter won't stall over 1400 (9.5" 3200rpm converter) Thought it was a bad converter, ordered a second one.. same issue.

FTI and Transgo told me to check charge pressure and line pressure.. Today i checked line pressure and it's 100psi with the TV forwards and 150 with the TV pulled back.. According to Sonnax it should be:

Line Pressure in D21
  • Idle: 54-60 PSI
  • Stall: 90-96 PSI
Sooo.. what i'm curious about is will too much line pressure change the charge pressure or is that controlled by the TC valve in the valve body only or relative to line pressure? I'm waiting on a fitting so i can check cooler line pressure.. just trying to get an idea before hand..

P.S. trans is a 727 with a tf-2 kit, i am wondering if i could have done something wrong installing the kit to make the pressure this high? Adjuster is flush with the bracket per transgos directions

Pressure is fine with the TF-2 kit. How are u checking the stall? U need to be in manual 3rd gear to check converter stall. Kim
thanks on the pressure.. i think i found the problem.. btw.. TC pressure is 33-45 which i'm happy to see...

Need to have a mod delete this thread

No delete - tell us what you found to fix it!

I will after i test it this weekend (i hope.. also putting in some wedges to change my pinion angle a bit)... it's such a dumb problem that i hate myself for it....

If you did it, I'm sure I could make the same mistake so do tell us. Even if it helps only me!!

Well, what’s the verdict? Kim
none yet.. just got the exhaust back on bout 30 mins ago.. and i'm hot and hungry.. gonna eat :) need to put the tires on then will test it tomorrow..

I forgot how loud these gibson mufflers are, i shoulda grabbed some flowmasters or something.. it's 3" to the bumper and it sounds like open headers.

Doesn't bug me much but neighbors gonna ***** at 6am when i go to work

took me forever to get it back together also. changed the pinion angle when i was doing this.. chasing a vibration around 55+

K... so i hate to post this.. but i said i would.. i already feel like a moron for not figuring it out. Soo.. my original mufflers on my car were Gibson MWA's 3".... they are insanely loud even with full exhaust and i leave for work at 6am and i didn't want to be a dick to my neighbors.. So right before winter i ordered a pair of 3" big *** normal mufflers from summit and put them on.. literally drove it once then parked the car for winter.

So through all of this problem i had with the motor not wanting to rev when taking off i thought was the converter locking up way early.. Nope.... fuckin mufflers... the exhaust sounded fine but something was wrong, i swapped them out back to the MWA's and the motor is happy as a puppy..

This stupidity cost me bout $2k wasted chasing ****..

Also my weird timing issue is gone too, timing working like it should.

I don't feel too bad, no one on 2 forums took a guess at exhaust either.. A Transgo guy mentioned it in a email.. and that's when i remembered i had swapped them before winter and all the symptoms fit..

Went for a test drive this morning (it's already shitty humid/hot out) and it runs good.. i have some popping over 4k in second gear, i think a bit much timing so i took it easy going home.

Now... i need to find a pair of the quietest good flowing mufflers i can get.

What's funny is.. it's a 318 with dual 3" exhaust, i thought even with a restrictive oem type muffler there's no way it would be bad enough to mess with such a small motor.. i was wrong

Think i'm going to go with hooker max flows..

On the upside... the pinion angle seems to have helped a lot, and i wouldn't have found my rear shocks were bad if i didn't go through this.. 100 miles and complete junk already.. buy cheap buy twice...

That is pretty wild. I would be cutting open one of those mufflers to see what's inside.

I think I posted in your "possible bad converter" thread on the FBBO site about seeing a 360 engine have a similar concern back in the 90s caused by running exhaust manifolds with a big camshaft, but I completely dismissed an exhaust issue for you when I saw you were running headers.

So, does feel really good now?
Edited to add: Never mind. I read your post again and saw you were taking it easy. Looking forward to the progress now.

It feels much much better.. i only went bout 3 miles.. it pulls good.. i have some exhaust popping in 2nd at high rpm which i think is a timing thing, will figure it out.. so i just cruised it back home so i don't hurt anything, it's way better though.

Changing the mufflers completely changed the tune.. it's insanely rich now, like eye burning rich. I have to re-do all of that again, no biggy there. just happy the front of the motor doesn't leak after doing the timing cover in car :) In RTV i trust...

And yeah.. the only time i have seen a exhaust do stuff like this is like a bad catalytic and at least they glow and whistle to let you know :)
