Locate cable accelerator pedal in relation to single barrel linkage

Here's what the conversion with the correct early A V8 pedal assembly looks like. My car had the slant 6 pedal and mechanism from the factory and I installed the early V8 pedal and mechanism. It took me all of 15 minutes to do. No measuring, no guesswork, no sloppy, messy, I'll fitting incorrect parts. I drilled two holes through two FACTORY indents already there. I didn't even have to center punch the holes. Cleaned the metal chips off and BOLTED the mechanism in place, stuck the cable in and connected it to the carburetor and drove down the road.

That's what I have in there now, Rob

Yup, that's a '67-up accelerator pedal; you'll just have to dope out the location on your own – many people have installed that kind of pedal in pre-'67 A-bodies over the years, so it's doable.

Lokar stuff has caused a lot of people a lot of problems over a lot of years; you might want to see this thread for better options.

Real easy to install too, wasn't it?
Sometimes looking and waiting for the correct parts and paying what people want for it takes more than just fixing something that you already have but I appreciate seeing what the correct one looks like and if I had it like I have this one I put it in and be done :)

Like I said. Have at it!

I’m thinking somebody has to have used the late pedal before and I’m sure I will make it work. I just thought a picture from the engine side of the firewall and seeing where the cable comes through would just make it easier. I’m glad there’s people willing to help try to figure that out. I don’t really believe there’s a need to buy something different got this one for $2 at the fall fling Mopar swap meet.
That's what I did. I've got a 67+ accelerator pedal set-up on my big block '66 Dart. I just put where the pedal was where I wanted it. The cable exits right behind the valve cover. You can barely see the cable in this photo. I still need a shorter cable, but this works for now.

Thanks, Dan. I’ll check it out.

OK, I looked through all the posts very quickly, but I didn't notice anyone saying what year A body the OP is working with. 63 A bodies will NOT have the dimples for the V8 bracket. 64-66 will, but the dimples will properly locate only the 64-66 V8 pedal bracket and assembly. However, you can make a later A body swing pedal work and you can do so in a 63. I did.

Little bit of trimming, drill a couple of holes, and voila.

On mine, I cut off the pedal and welded on a 64-66 V8 spoon and used the 64-66 V8 pedal. But you don't have to, just leave the swing pedal on.

Does this look like correct gas pedal assembly?

With new firewall pad:

OK, took another look and it's clear from the OP's pic of the engine compartment that he has a 64 or later. So yeah, it will have the dimples. Problem these days would be finding an original 64-66 V8 pedal setup. If not, the later swing pedal could be made to work.

As for the throttle and kickdown linkage, I used a factory two barrel setup, slightly modified to put the cable end at the right place for a four barrel, lengthened the kickdown flat rod by welding two halves together, and cut and welded the lower rod to the original 63 rod.

So:

As you can see, the throttle cable comes out of the firewall where the original throttle rod did. Most observers at a car show won't realize that none of this is original 63 throttle/kickdown stuff.

Thanks, and that’s what I thought about finding the original V8 pedal as in all of my searches for a V8 pedal I did not see any of the early model versions. So I was going to make this work and I appreciate your help, but as I said, not expecting to be able to find the original version pedal but here on the forum Rat Rod Al let me know he had the right one my second fear was going to be way too much money but instead He was very fair so of course as you read through the thread the best thing to do is to use the original part and now that it’s been found, that’s what I’m gonna do. Lol

Is the early A pedal also different between the slant and the V8? Or is it just the linkage/plate that bolts to the firewall. The v8 pedal looks like it has a wear pad that I don't remember seeing on the slant pedal.

Pedals are different.

As 65 Cuda stated

From the 64 Parts book

Top diagram is Slant 6
Bottom diagram is V8

Thanks guys. I’ve been collecting parts for a Super 6 BBD swap on my ‘65 Dart. I have the firewall bracket but not the pedal.

The '62-'65 B-body accelerator pedal setup is cable-type, too. Different to the '64-'66 A-body cable-type setup; the B-body assembly uses a nicer (lower-friction) roller wheel at the pedal/bellcrank junction, instead of the A-body spoon-shaped end of the bellcrank rubbing on a nylon pad on the back of the pedal. But the B-body setup can be installed in an early A-body without much of any more difficulty than installing the A-body setup. I put one in my '62 Lancer.

The 62-65 B Body bellcrank/roller wheel fits in a 59 Dodge and works with its accelerator pedal too. That's what I have in my 59 Coronet. But I never thought about it being usable in an A body. Thanks for the info.
