Looking for guidance for a LA 408 drop in Crate for a 4 speed set up

He did a 1993 or later external balance flywheel

I use a Centerforce clutch and pressure plate so I'll see if they make one
The CFII disc is, IMO, very harsh. But with those skinny short rollers, you won't/may not notice. The close ratio demands more rear gear. You will be looking at,at least 3.91s.
That MRL has so much torque, I would recommend either the 2.66 low with the 3.55s or the 3.09 low with 3.23s or even 2.94s if she is gonna spend a lot of time on the hiway.
Typically we use 10/1 starter gear for a potent streeter. Well; with a 2.47 low, this requires 4.05s. With a 2.66 low, this is 3.76s. with the 3.09 low this is 3.23s. But this is just for blasting off the line.

If you wanna blast off from 32mph, then gear it at about 6.78 or more in second gear. With the close ratio box, this will be 3.91s

Good for you man
Just a heads up, I've had a lot of issues with stuff breaking after installing my MRL motor...the transmission, the rearend, and any speed limit I've come across
sounds like a good thing, altho I tried to take care of the weak stuff to start with.

The transmission was unexpected, but I already had the 8 3/4
I installed the 408 in the fall thinking I would "baby" it to keep from breaking the rear end and swap it over the winter
It was less then 72 hours from the first time I fired that 408 up to the moment I shredded the spider gears in that 7 1/4

(I had actually bought the 8 3/4 before I decided to buy a 408 BUT I spun a rod bearing on the 360 and that forced my hand)

The motor is still externally ballanced? Pay close attention there, the magnum and LA 360 are slightly different on ballance weight, sounds like you need a 10.5 flywheel with magnum ballance maybe...

Yes I will need a 1993 or later external balance flywheel

Can someone recommend a quality aftermarket HD clutch set up and pilot Bering for this motor

The correct flywheel is a 143 tooth external balance 5.9 magnum.

Thanks

I think your bellhousing dictates what flywheel you need, and yours is probably a 130 tooth. I'd take the used one you have now, and have it ballanced to magnum specs, assuming that's what the builder ballanced it with. I would have assumed a stroker engine with different pistons ect, would have been internally ballanced, but perhaps not.

It's the 318 mini stroker that MRL BUILT

I think everyone knows that, what's your point?

Because that's the flywheel Mike suggested that I get. (143 t)

Your correct I have a new centerforce set up on my motor that's in the car now.

I'm asking the experts here cause I have no clue what's what...
You guys are awesome with info.

So lucky there's no one around my area that has any knowledge on mopars.

Hard to beat that CF. That MRL is gonna need it. Perhaps not on the street, But for sure when/where you can get it to hook. Hooking is gonna be a problem

Found this one it's a 130tooth

Is this correct?

I should never have clicked on this thread. MRL Performance is going to be the death of my marriage.

McLeod sell a flywheel with bolt on weights, it works great.
I actually have 2 of them, got tired of buying flywheels when I change motors.

Did you buy the one with the weights?
That flywheel has saved my wallet, ended up with a external balance 340 in my duster, and a 360 mag in my truck.
Two of the weirdest balanced mopars ever.

Bought the one that is external balanced for 5.9 magnum crate motors 130 tooth I called centerforce tech line... and also checked with mike at MRL
