MAD ammeter bypass question

The stock fusible link? What is wrong with fusible links? There is a reason fusible links were used over fuses in this charging/electrical system.
Fuse links are a complete piece of ****.

In about 71/72, a couple of girls in a frickin Datsun, window shopping, A-holed my then really nice 70RR. While the thing was (unfortunately) being hacked back together by McCune Chrysler Plymouth, in National City, I had a beater slant powered Valiant to drive.

One cold morning at the RADAR shop I started it up, the Chief came in and says, "uh, is your car supposed to be squealing and smoking?" I go out and the alternator is STOPPED. I shut it down, and for some reason wiggled the pulley with a rag, and it turned out a DIODE had fallen down inside the alternator, and SHORTED when I wiggled it. I stood right there and watched the ENGINE BAY HARNESS turn to smoke and melted plastic, and after about five seconds, AFTER the entire harness had welded itself together, THE FUSE LINE went "pop?"
