To anyone who has been watching our build, you know we have been at it a long time. We thought we would have it completed by end of August but there were just too many road blocks. We are so close but things keep happening..wires, tools breaking and long waits for machine work and parts...and lastly, my health. Such is the life of a restore.

My kid has been a trooper ...not only working by my side but also doing the household work that I cannot do anymore.. as well as keeping up his schooling and participating in sports.

He really wants to hear the engine..we have not started it since we got it in '09 even though we had it broken in last year.

I got this idea while watching Graveyard Carz last night when they started mark's car by shorting out a relay , I think ?

What is the bare minimum that I need done to get her running ?

Where we are at the moment:

Steering column and gauge cluster are not in.

Gas line is in and hooked up.

All running gear is in. Radiator, carb, belts are on. PVC and breather hoses are not on.

I have most of the wiring installed including the wire on the transmission. The trans is in neutral at the moment.

No oil in trans...have to finish running the cooling lines. I assume oil has to be in it.

No water in the rad..I assume that has to be filled with a water / anit freeze combo. Would a surfactant be good ?

I can use the battery out of my RAM.

Installed the dizzy...I am pretty sure the spark wires are on the correct cylinders.

What else do I need to do before I can turn the engine over and hopefuly, it will start ?

Your help is always appreciated.
Ian.

What

You will want the coolant in the radiator.
Lines and fluid in the transmission.
At the very minimum I would install an aftermarket mechanical oil pressure gauge.
You need ignition and a way to jump the starter, you can jump the starter on the selonid on the firewall.

Keep a fire extuingusher nearby.

Oil
Prime it (new motor been sitting)
Fuel
Battery
Ignition system powered
coolant (if you want to run it more than 30 seconds to a min)
I don't think I would run new rings in new cylinders without coolant though.
trans fluid

They didn't short a relay, they ( jumpered it ) to start the car without needing the all the starting wiring done.
(You can look this up on Google)

What distributor are you using?
Points or electronic.

I can draw you up a wiring diagram of what you will need.

This is good.

MOPER orange box electronic.

Will do.

I am thinking Friday will be a good day to do this.

Thanks
Ian.

Ian, I have a start box you can borrow for starting mopars if you want to get it running and maybe move it around without any of the wires hooked up to the engine

just put power to the start box, hook plug wire to coil and plug in the distributor, heck if I'm up that way I could even help you fire it

Is this a new engine, especially with a new cam that needs to be broken in? Google up cam break in if so............Cams generally need to be run ABOVE 2000 RPM immediately and for 15-20 minutes depending on individual manufacturer instructions

What that means is that you MUST have coolant, oil pressure, transmission, fuel and timing etc, all "ready to go" immediately so that you are not "burbling" the engine coughing and dying at low RPM for a period of time, which will ruin the brand new cam.

OTHERWISE on a used engine, cam broken in..........

You don't need coolant for a "few seconds" to fire it up.

Definately get fluid in the transmission.

You can jumper either at the starter relay or at the starter

Hotwire ignition to the key side of the ballast resistor

Make sure all wiring not hooked up is safetied off, taped, etc.

I've fired engines even without a carb for a few seconds...............

hanging on a hoist, use a battery and jumper cables to the starter

and my super duper (LOL) "emergency" ignition"

Used engine. Didn't even put the manifolds on it!! This was taken right before I installed the cap/ wires/ emergency ignition.

Emergency / spare ignition, is a GM HEI module in the box. Just hook up ground, "hot," distributor connectors and plug in a coil wire................

I have a setup like you have pictured, except mine uses a chrysler 4 pin ECU (same difference) and I don't live far from Ian to help if he wishes

his engine has already be broke in properly at a shop last year so it shouldn't be much of an issue to get running
