Hopefully I can upload a few pics here showing it back from body/paint and the rebuilt engine and tranny ready for installation. Been working on wiring and harnesses this week. The car was orange when I got it; but I wanted to have the original Ruby red color. The body/paint was time consuming and expensive as it had 4 or 5 coats of paint on it. I also had the carburetor rebuilt by Guaranteed Carburetor.

I have also replaced most of the front suspension and steering including a faster power steering gearbox and new steering column components and wheel.

Nice color

So with a little winding to get some oil pressure and one priming, the engine started and seems to run beautifully. We are getting 75 psi of oil pressure. There is a loud howling associated with rpm that even you hear wind down for a second or less after you shut the engine off. We are thinking the starter isn’t disengaging and winding up with engine speed. I will pull the starter and see what the gear looks like. It is a new smaller more powerful starter. Any thoughts?

The Dart LOOKS GRRRate .
Is the starter aftermarket or from a Dakota ? Could you post a picture of it ? If its aftermarket that could be the problem .

So I think I have a problem with my rebuilt 273 engine. I have been running the engine some and adjusting timing. I am running between 5 deg advance and right now firing at TDC. Seems to develop 75 psi oil pressure no matter rpm and it is a smoker (both banks). I think it may be using oil. I am using Comp (I think) 10w-30 break-in oil. Any thoughts?

Probably don’t have good enough compressor now to do a good leak down test. Damn. Do have a compression tester.

An experienced engine builder rebuilt the low end and did a valve job on the heads. I realize nothing is for sure, but I relied on that. If I did something wrong (maybe with gaskets) on the rebuild, could that be an issue with the smoking? Smoking from both banks though. I may have sprayed oil on parts during rebuild; but wouldn’t that burn off pretty quickly? I have probably run the engine about 20 min total.

There are no unusual noises while running. I am going to reinstall my oil pressure gauge and recheck pressures through speed range which I really didn’t do before.
