Will do tomorrow when I visit the machine shop
Heads were never on the block
Id spring for new rods if you are having it balanced. Who knows what those 50+ year old rods have been through. Have the bushed ends checked.

I reused 50+ yr old oriignal 340 rods. I think i added an oiling hole?? Fn memory is failing...
as long as the oiling hole isn't in the side of the block

I've seen enough of the "car wizard" to somewhat know what to avoid, and that looks like a textbook example! No wonder the Germans never went to the moon, nothing could have been made complicated enough to satisfy them...

ha
they have a problem of over engineering everything ,we would say once they figure out a better way of doing something they re-engineer it and f-it up

Unless you consider the Volkswagen Beetle. Doesn’t get much more simple than that. And it worked!!

OEM 340 pistons were cast, after market replacement pistons were offered in cast or forged varieties.

Going cast
I know forged piston will knock when cold
Any brand I should buy
And chrome rings or ??

Base your build around what type of driving you will be doing once it's completed. I'm my opinion, for a stockish street car you don't need chrome moly rings. For a street/strip car, regular rings are fine also. In my bracket car, which is "race" only I use moly rings and make sure to properly break the engine in on a run stand. These are just my thoughts, others may or will differ, I just do what I think s best for my situation.

Forged pistons will not knock when cold, I have run them most all my life. Cast are good, Hypereutectic are good till they fail and ruin everything in your engine. I run ductile iron, moly filled top rings in everything. I have also run Chrome faced rings with good results. Speed Pro, Sealed Power, Hastings are all good names. I'm trying Total Seal gapless top rings in my street only 340 this time.

i'd hunt around for some NOS/dead stock OEM, speed pro, trw, badger, etc. slugs. they pop up on the bay pretty frequently.

personally, i don't think i'd go chrome rings on this type of build. i mean, unless the pistons came with them then i'd just roll.

It's good to have a 340 once you get into it you'll see how much beefier the parts are compared to a 318. Alot of 318 guys have never been into a 340 they think a 318 is same it isn't.
