I got a brand new MSD R2R distributor and a CompCams distributor gear. Is there a secret way to put the gear on the shaft? The MSD instructions do not say one word about the gear.

Thanks,
Wes

You don't change the distributor gear, you change the distributor drive gear that the distributors slot engages, it's ran off the cam to time the distibutor and drive the oil pump. So get a long flat head screwdriver insert in slot and turn it so that it backs it's way up if it keeps falling then long needle nose pliers to get it out.
Why are you changing this?

Also when installing this drive gear be sure to have the engine @ TDC then insert it having it settle with the slot pointing at the front driver side intake bolt.

Hey 340. I'm in the process of a complete rebuild. My first time ever working on something of this magnitude.

It would seem I'm missing the rod that connects the oil pump and the distributor, the one the gear goes on. Is that correct?

Yes that looks to be, so you would get a hardened tip 'pinned gear' drive ,pop out the pin switch gears & replace pin

Mancini racing has them for a decent price.

I feel like a real bonehead now...lol

Thanks 340!

I bought mine from Summit. I bought the MP distributor/oil pump drive gear. it was about forty dollars, if I remember correctly. All-steel construction, too, I believe.

The bronze gear is only to be used on billet roller cams. Everything else uses the steel gear. You can get one anywhere. Your dealer could get one for you too.

Correct, you only run that bronze gear when you run a roller cam. If you are running a high volume pump you will need a drive gear with a hardened shaft. Are you just replacing the distributor or is this a new build? If you are just replacing the distributor then there shouldn't be a need to mess with the gear drive.

Bill,

Its a new build. I installed a Melling HP oil pump and ordered the Melling shaft last night.

Well crap, thanks for the warning dusterdon. I'll see if my dealership can get me a steel one.

Anyone need a bronze gear? LOL
Thanks again fellas.
Wes

What 340s said... You dont use that gear unless you have a billet cam. The MP bronze drives are closer to $80 IIRC. You should have a new oil pump drive and drive bushing for the block if the engine is all new too.

Use P3690715 if you are using a HV pump. Mancini Racing has them, as does Summit Racing.. $54 or $52 respectively. The stock style drive has a pressed gear (no pin to reinforce it), the hex is done without a taper so it's weaker there, and the tip isnt hardened. The HV pump will abuse the stocker type..lol.

Another trick for getting the gear/shaft in an out of an engine. Two large flat blade screw drivers in the slot and squeeze the handles together. The tips will wedge in the slot and you can lift the gear and shaft out or put it in.

Thats good to know, thanks.

I payed $29 for a hardened tip pined gear drive through mancini and hughes also had them for the same price, $66 doesn't sound like a good deal.
Of corse now I look at how much they are now and damm thats one hell of an increase in price, looks like the winner is $54.
