Need opinions on this Demon for $25k

-
Not enough pictures to know for sure, but if it’s a numbers matching 340 3 speed as claimed, it looks pretty clean, I mean, it’s not out of the ballpark yet. Would definitely need to check a bunch of boxes you can’t check from just those pictures, but it might not be out of line.

Asking 65k for that one today at Carlisle. Car was crazy nice.

Here's a fresh pop up on fb market place. 72 factory 340 with 4 speed. Looks like they put 71 duster graphics on it. Fairly priced. Not mine!

1972 Plymouth Duster 340

340ci LA-series V8 Mopar engine
4-barrel Carter AVS carburetor
Manual steering and manual brakes
New master brake cylinder
New distributor and wires
Mopar Performance valve covers
K&N air cleaner

Dual exhaust system
Factory style exhaust tips
4-speed manual transmission (A833)
Floor mounted Hurst shifter
Chrysler 8.75” rear end
Sure-Grip limited-slip differential
Torsion bar front suspension
Leaf spring rear suspension
Front disc brakes and rear drum brakes
Factory 14-inch Rallye wheels
225/70 Futura GLS Super Sport tires
Hemi Orange paint (repainted)
Matte black 340 Dual-scoop hood
Duster 340 side stripe package
Factory badging and “340” callouts
Bucket seats with rear bench seat
New black seat covers
Original dash and trim
Woodgrain trimmed dash
3-spoke sport steering wheel
New headliner
Duster carpet floor mats
New Autogage gauge set (Volts/Temp/Oil Pressure)
New dash-mounted analog clock
Heater/Defroster in working order
Original AM/FM stereo and speakers

VIN: VS29H2B300477
V = Valiant/Duster series (A-body)
S = Special price class (Duster model)
29 = 2-door sports hardtop
H = 340ci 4-barrel V8 (High Performance engine)
2 = 1972 model year
B = Built at Hamtramck, Michigan (Dodge Main Plant)
300477 = Sequential production number

This Duster is a strong-running survivor with honest road presence and solid mechanical condition. The numbers-matching 340 V8 starts easily and runs smoothly, pulling confidently through all four gears. The clutch engages properly, and shifts are clean. There are no fluid leaks or signs of oil burn, and the car drives straight with no known mechanical issues.

The paint was resprayed in its factory Hemi Orange some years ago and now shows patina and wear around the edges, contributing to its authentic driver-quality aesthetic. Minor hail damage is present, mostly visible on the roof and hood. All chrome bumpers and exterior trim retain a great shine with minimal wear. The chassis shows its age but remains solid with no significant rust or structural concerns. All four tires hold air and have usable tread but are dated and would benefit from replacement.

Inside, the cabin presents well with new black seat covers, a new headliner, and a fresh gauge set. The original passenger seat beneath the cover has a crack but remains supportive, and no tears are present on the remaining seats. The car is currently titled with a bonded Texas title, which becomes eligible for release and conversion to a clean blue Texas title in November 2025.

Dam can't drive a 4 speed. His knee or leg or something.
And no one ever replaced a 833 for 904/727 cable shifter and transmission cooler.
Be unknown territory. Don't want him to have to reinvest the wheel.
No A/C and so far no one in history has added one to an A Body ever.
Be complete unknown. Be like Star Trek where no man has gone before

Yea.. they definitely don't make parts to do it either and if they did it wouldn't have instructions readable. He's better off riding the can-am. Or his huffy

Funny how the market changes. 10 years ago I posted my dads 72 all original demon here for $18k, didn’t get a single inquiry. He ended up selling on eBay for $15k. Everything was original other than the wheels but it was an auto car.

$24k, but it has hail damage and absolutely terrible paint prep (at least on the blackout). Substantial rust in the spare tire well that was painted over and is now cracking. Front seat covers are a cheap fix for the needs replacing upholstery under them.

Peeling paint on the fender, hood isn't sitting flat on the passenger side, dents in the middle of the wedge

Pretty significant dents in the roof skin and c-pillar

Big crunchy rust in the tire well, tail lights are pretty rough, filler tube was oversprayed on both ends, sender wire and filler tube gasket too
518783574_1238731934383536_6949086091228190605_n.jpg

Rust/dirt/water marks on the inner fender edges. It was outside and stationary long enough to have collected water sitting there. Painted the shocks and bushings when they sprayed the engine compartment

Bumper has a pretty significant bend, and I think that's rust on the bottom of the bumper not a reflection. Stripe doesn't line up fender to door

Maybe it's a real 340 car, but there's more issues apparent in the pictures of this one than for the original Demon that started this thread. Definitely a better chance of sketchy body work. Also, no pictures of the VIN or any of the body numbers so the "numbers matching" bit is all on faith. If it is a real 340 car the price given the condition may not be out of line, but there's a ton of work to do on that one if you're gonna start fixing stuff

Yeah, 10 years will do that. A-body values have probably close to doubled in that time.

Talking with a friend today about value of our cars.
Conclusion: nobody knows, including us.

Imo, it seems value is drastically different between I want to sell, I'm selling, and I want to buy threads.

all i know is that when i want to buy, everything is a million bucks and nobody has it; and when i want to sell it's not worth nuthin' and there's 10 of them in the classifieds for less.

Ain't that the dam truth

Sounds like it could be a situation where a parrot could help out.
These days every one has one of them emotional support animals.
When his leg starts acting up, he could just have the bird drive.
But he might need an eye patch too.

I thought that summed just MY life!???

Life is funny.
The "word: is how you "can buy a done car way cheaper than buying a project and making it"..... but makes a difference is what the word "restored" means and who did the work. Usually this "word" means the guy looking for a "nice" car, wants one perfect, needs nothing for pennies on the $.

You got that right.
