Hi,
I'm looking at a 1961 Dodge Dart Pioneer, 4dr.
It has a 383, with a touch button shift.
It has just had the engine all gone through, it has had some performance parts added, it was bored to a 400 with Keith Black pistons, RV cam, 400 police interceptor heads, Mallory Unililte, Viscous clutch. I have know idea if these parts do much in the power department? I realize it is no mussel car, but what kind of Horsepower would you expect from a motor such as this?
He also said he had put performance dual exhaust on the car.

Is their anything to look out for on these cars? I have very little experiences with vintage cars, I just thought it may be a fun project. The body is very nice with some light surface rust. The Chrome is all in very good shape, the interior is a little weathered, but is not to bad, it has Air condition. What would you expect to pay for a car similar to this, the owner has slips for $3500 of motor work that has been done to the car.
I would greatly appreciate any help that anyone could give.

Thank You
Stephen G

I don't think you can bore a 383 to a 400.
Also not knowing the compression ratio and cam grind makes even a stab in the dark HP guess a forgetaboutit thing.
Never heard of police intercepter heads. Valve size would help in a HP guess as well.
A well planned engine with mild build up parts that would match the rest of whats there (As in OE parts unchanged) could add some decent power. The oldest book I have (Chiltons) rates the 383 in '66 @ 325 HP w/425 lbs. of Tq.
He could have added 35 - 40 HP if done right and still act like stock.

On MoPar cars, you'll need to look at the under side very close. Look for rust starting at the frame rails in the engine compartment all the way back to where the bumper mounts. Where the T-bars go in, where the rear springs mount front and rear.
The look at the electric wires for rotted/frayed/broken/spliced right or poorly and bulk head connectors for rotted plastic and burnt wire connections inside the bulk head. You can see them if you move the wires around a bit.

Good luck and happy hunting. Hope it works out for you. There nice cars.
