Oil filter orientation

I am installing a new exhaust in my 1967 barracuda and I need to decide if I purchase a remote filter kit or can I re position the 90 degree filter adapter that is on my 273 to make room. The picture below shows the shorty filter in the new position. Will this vertical orentiation trap air inside the filter and cause problems? What would the forum do?

I don't think it will clear the manifold.Usually they face to the rear and slightly down.

Put your exhaust on first. You can clock it correctly instead of just guessing. I have headers and installed the 90 degree adapter after i had the headers in place. If you are using manifolds it will be even more easy.

Thanks, used the mopar red engine paint, sanded the fins off then hand brushed the pentastar with chrysler blue.

I need to provide more information. I purchased a manifold set from Treblig. The passanenger side manifold is a 360 magnum with end not middle discharge. The oil filter in its orginal position (pointed back and tipped down, see pic without filter) causes an interference to where the exhaust down pipe will route.

My question is about best practice. I don't know if the oil filter draining back to the engine if orientated in the previous pictures. I found this post from a fellow member that purchased a manifold set from Treblig.

Im considering purchasing a remote oil filter mount from summit to relocate the filter to position that mimics the orginal horizontal-tipped down position.

I run a similar relocation kit - my filter mounts vertically on the fire wall - there should be more than enough oil pressure to allow you to mount the filter in any orientation you like...

i like the idea of cast manifolds with a 2.25" discharge so I purchased a set. The installation,so far, is pretty straight forward. Except for the oil filter.

Does anyone know of a manufacture that makes a oil filter mount that allows the filter to mount perpendicular to the block without adding the complexity of the remote oil filter? There will be ample room under the pictured exhaust manifold for a full sized filter.

The oil filter orientation makes no difference. Run it however it needs to be.

Here's my '69 Barracuda with the 90 degree adapter and a 360 magnum manifold. Looks like it's pointed towards the front (and maybe just a little down) and it clears no problem. There's plenty of room towards the front. You can probably put it in numerous locations a few degrees this way or that way but the important thing is that you have to be able to replace (remove and replace) the filter without getting it stuck against the drag link or anything else when you change your oil.

From the looks of it I could have even rotated the filter up a little more but the exact location is up to you. I installed my manifold then got under the car and placed the 90 degree adapter (with filter) at the clock rotation that gave me the most clearance. Even with the adapter in the best location I still have to turn the steering wheel all the way to the left (to clear the drag link) to get the filter out of that cramped space.

I moved my oil filter up to the right front fender. I figured I am getting too old to be fighting with the filter where it was. I had a terrible time getting the old filter out from the exhaust manifold, being hot did not help either

You guys are awesome. The remote filter makes the most sense after reading Pawned's post. I test fitted the manifold and filter and everything fits (see pics) but you have to be Houdini himself to get the oil filter out from under the car.

The torsion bar, the steering linkage (turned all the way left) and trans angle bracket to the motor all gets in the way. I can only imange the mess I will make with a full oil filter not to mention who changes the oil on a cold car...I know not me. I'm ordering a remote filter kit. Thanks for helping me figure this out.

The 2.25 mandrel bent tubing from Columbia river tube in OR is supposed to be delivered today. Can't wait to complete my exhaust and get back on the road before they start spreading salt!!!!!

FYI....a buddy just emailed me a parts diagram of a common 90 degree Mopar filter mount. I count 4 seals. I hope this helps and I'm sorry I don't have the application data to tell you the exact make model and year.

LOL.....Actually I told him that his 90 degree adapter would work just fine, my car is set up that way. "MObarracuda" doesn't want the hassle of changing the filter in that location so he decided to go with a remote filter. When he said that he was going to go with the remote filter I remembered about the "new in box" one that I had on the shelf. We talked about many manifold installation issues extensively (over 20 PMs) before purchase. I always try to give my customers as much information as possible (and include pics). I want everyone who does business with me to be happy!!
The great majority of FABO members that buy my manifolds use the stock filter location, a few prefer the remote filter.


PS - I used to work for the government so you're half right... LOL!!!

My pleasure. As you said, it was pure hell getting the filter out of the cage that Mopar placed around it. Last time, I grabbed it with a large pliers and crushed it to the size needed to slide out. What a mess.
If it was out in the open I would not have relocated it, as I have to get under there to drain the oil.
This is so much easier and you can replace the filter without spilling one drop of oil, anywhere

that is a great looking car, i love that color (but i have been told my the missus that if i ever want to repaint the duster it will need to be the same shade of orange it is now, instead of the EL5 i want)

i wasnt really questioning Gill's integrity in this deal, but looking at it superficially, it read pretty funny to me

I can not tell what color this is. Orange, gold, dirty yellow. Sometimes being color blind can be a blessing, but not this time

Someone else painted the car in the 80's with a metallic enamel, I think. The original color is a mild yellow. I don't know what the color is on the repaint. I had it described as a metallic gold, butterscotch, super mustard and my wife, who grew up on the farm, likes to call it calf scours yellow. You have to know my wife....
