I came across this site.

http://tiresmoke.iwarp.com/700R4%20in the Duster.html

http://tiresmoke.iwarp.com/Duster.html

Where someone took an 700r4 overdrive trans with an adapater from Wilcap

http://www.wilcap.com/mopar.html#318350

and installed a 700r4 trans in his Duster. While reading this he states that he needed to cut the torsion bar cross member in order for it to fit. This is basically the same this as Keisler OD system they offer.

http://www.keislerauto.com/mopar/transmissions/automatic-4sp.asp

Here is some info from Keisler about there OD 700r4 that was on Mopar Style.

http://mopowerstyle.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-74901.html

So now it got me thinking why someone would spend the money on a Keisler system than just buying a Wilcap adapter.

Than I started thinking again and doing some research on the net about this and came across the 200 4r trans which is a compact OD trans. If the 700 r4 is hitting the torsion bar cross member may be that 200 4r may be a perfect fit (so to speak) without any cutting. But you would have to fabricate a cross member for the trans.

I know some people are a little weird about putting GM parts in a Mopar but this would be a cheaper version than Keisler system. Which your installing a GM trans anyway.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?????? Or would it work????

ide beat my car with a sledge hammer if i had to use a GM tranny,,
this leads to a topic im going to start,,,about the mopar auto OD,,,,

the keislier auto od is a 700 r4.....

Being an old GM guy I will tell you that Mopar trannys are far superior to GM trannys including the manual trannys also. But, if you were going to use a GM trans in your car I myself would use the 200-4R and not the 700R4. The 700R4 started life in S-10 pickups and then eventually found there way behind V8's. The 200-4R was used by Buick for there Turbo Regals and were the tranny they used in the Grand National. It was also used in GM diesel cars.

i currently have a 4 speed and looking in to a 5 speed with O.D the 2 choices are tremec,,and the all new richmond 5 speed with O.D.

also looking in to getting a mopar A-500 to go in to a streed rod with an early desoto hemi,,

If you had to a GM product I think the 200 r4 is the better choice, when properly built. The ratios are spread a little more evenly than the 700 r4
________1___2___3___4
200 R4 2.74 1.57 1.00 .67

700 R4 3.06 1.62 1.00 .70

And just for comparison, here are the Chrylser o/d autos

A500 2.74 1.54 1.00 .69

A518 2.45 1.45 1.00 .69

Notice that the 200 R4 and the A500 have almost identical ratios, in which case why not use the mopar version?

It doesn't seem that anyone from this site has run the Gear Vendor unit. I like everything that I have heard about and will be installing it soon. Any comments are appreciated.

know a few guys running them and they are happy with them but the OD isn't as much as other choices.... i know the one guy would have definatley gone with the keissler setup if it was out at the time.

I knew you needed to cut it for the A518 to fit but I wasn't sure about the A500.

It might be cheaper to put in an A500 than a 2004R but the 2004R seems it may require less work.

What do you mean it isn't as much???? Are you talking gearing or $$$$?

with a gear vendors and a 4:10 gear it is like having a 3:20 gear

with a 518 trans a 4:10 would be like having a 2:80 gear

a TKO600 5speed would be like having a 2:60 gear

and i know the keissler auto OD has a low first gear and more OD not sure on the actual ratios.

Assuming you have a small block, a BB does not use any of these transmissions. The only thing I have been able to find is a Gear Vendors add-on unit. At $2600, its the cheapest out there. Another possibility is the Passion 4 speed OD manual, but it works out to be as expensive as the keisler setup. Overall, I am pretty disappointed with the availability of OD transmissions and adaptors. I don't mind cutting my floor, maunaul or auto, I just don't want to pay $5000.

My Ultrabell just came in the mail this week for my 440 Dart and A-518. Here's a link to what it looks like. It keeps the trans in the stock location unlike an adapter, so things like linkage will still fit, and you don't have to cut off the side of the engine block to fit the starter.

Ultrabell surgery

Quicktime has SFI approved bells for the 4l60e-mopar motors coming out in the next 6-8 weeks.

The owner Ross wants to be able to put a "4l60e behind every domestic v8" The aftermarket has put the 4l60e behind 9 second Camaro's, so many parts builders and parts available.

I dont really like the 1-2 gear drop as stated above, but it's a realitively small O/D trans and will fit well into an Abody.

I've been thinking about a 200-4R behind a 360 magnum crate motor in a '69 Dart for the past week or so. Talked to several tranny companies about it and finally contacted Art Carr at California Performance Transmissions last week. He estimates total cost including converter and installation at about $3300. This does not include a new 8" longer driveshaft since the 200-4R is 8" shorter than a 727. It's also lighter and doesn't have as much HP loss through the transmission. The gear ratios are better than the 727 and it does not require trans tunnel surgery to fit. Art says he has a customer in PA with one behind a 406 stroker that runs 11.80s and still pulls down 25 mpg on the freeway.
Somebody tell me something bad about this setup......

Did you ever end up going with this setup?

a friend owns a trans shop in az. used to swear by the gv unit, now he swears at them. last 2 customers he put them in for have grenaded the units. one was in a diesel excursion and the other a low h.p. street car. he told me that he will not build me a trans and put one behind it. he has been building fords 4r70w or the aode for alot of people. i am pretty sure jw makes an ultra bell for it. one of the premier builders for this trans is a guy out of canada, http://www.lentechautomatics.com/aodproducts.html there is a few people in the Fairlane Club of America that speak very highly of him. not to wild about the idea of putting a ford trans in my mopar, but have heard horror stories about the tko stuff. the passon hemi od seems like a good idea, just not to sure about a 3 speed manual with an od for 4th. :read2:

Okay, endulge the poor-excuse-for-a-muscle-car-guy-because-he-has-never-run-a-car-down-the-1320 ...

Do you hit 4th gear in the 1/4 mile? How 'bout in a typical street race? (Not that I condone (nor expect to engage in) such activities.

I know this is an old thread sorry for that, but I just wanted to say that I now own that Duster on the iwarp website. Mark is a GM tech. and knows the 700R4 like the back of his hand. He also has used the 700R4 in other projects as-well so that is the main reason he chose this trans. I've heard the 700R4's can handle up to 6 to 700hp. I wouldn't count on it but if that's true then I have plenty of growing room.

theres a brand new 5 speed manual tranny out,,box appers to be same size as mopar 4 speed,,was designed for the mopar guys,,,to fit with out hacking,,,,,,i dont have the link but its made by MC,leod
