The yellow square appears to be the factory welded splice. Chrysler did it. It's actually a pretty robust connection, as long as the factory tape stays on it. Of course, if it comes off, since it's a power connection, if it finds ground, it can cause some pretty big problems. As for all the butt connectors, rest assured, that's not factory. lol
Kenworth truck, dash harness fire. 32 wires melted. Splice on each end. 64 butt connectors. Was no fun at all.

It's been cut, obviously. Go to mymopar.com and see if they have a factory service manual. Some they some some they don't. Downloadable format and free. It will have a wiring diagram that will help you figure all that mess out.

Looks like a bunch of shrink tube, a soldering iron, and black vinyl tape will fix it right up, along with a schematic as rusty said from my mopar, or get a laminated full color schematic from www.classiccarwiring.com

Rob, didnt they use sort of band clamp on that multi tap connection? sort of a crimp ring? I see that type of stuff in telephone RA (ready access but we call them 'really awful' )bags and I just cut both ends and make 1 section splice. 2 splices are better than 7!

Not that I know of. I've only cut open ?5 or 6? or maybe 8 over my lifetime, and there was "nothin" just welded. On a side note I found my first FAILED welded splice in about 71-72 on a friend's 69 RR when stationed at NAS Miramar. He thought I was never going to get his car together.. I had the cluster out and wire strung out of the hole. I had done a lot of voltage checks and "knew" that's where it had to be. he was amazed and I was flabbergasted LOLOL

My 65 Barracuda had a slow electrical drain for a while, couldn't figure out where it came from until I was putting in a NOS under dash wiring harness I got off ebay and got the old one out where I could see it. I think you can see the bad part in the pic below - it was the ammeter positive wire, which got fried a while back and burned off its insulation. Still mostly protected, but not completely. Drain was slow enough that I still drove the car, but disconnected the battery whenever I parked it as otherwise it would kill the battery in a week or so. Guess I was lucky it never caught fire.
I also had to replace the under dash harness in my 63 Valiant as the PO had cut and spliced every single wire in the harness. Found an excellent used harness in the junkyard, cleaned and re-wrapped it. That used harness has been working fine for 25 years.
My son-in-law cut every single wire in the under dash harness in his 49 Dodge so he could take the dash out and paint it. He later sold it to me looking good but needing a lot of mechanical work. I replaced the original under dash and engine harness with reproduction from Rhode Island wiring.
Lastly, my Dad somehow buggered the wiring in his 67 Hemi Charger. Wrapped up a bunch of burnt looking wiring and drove it for years, finally replacing all the wiring with a reproduction M&H harness from Year One.
And that doesn't count replacing the wiring in my 56 Plymouth not because someone had messed it up, but just because its old cloth-covered wiring had a bunch of bare spots where the insulation had rotted off from the heat of the motor.
Back in the day I never thought about re-wiring a car, but all this stuff is starting to get really old and also a lot of it has been messed with by people who had no business doing so.

I know I'm right....
rewiring a car used to be pretty basic: work You unwrap the stock harness (the wrap didnt stick, just unwound) and you picked out the bad wire and cut and rewove it. cut yourself a new wire from a spool and worked it back into the harness and reterminated the ends. Nowadays the bulk wire is so dang expensive that a used harness is cheaper. 14g GPT is like ~.15/ft in bulk and its one color.

I once replaced a cam in a 79 Z 28 . Drinking beer the whole time. Near the end I was leaning over the nose of the car putting the timing cover bolts in and I said " I cant do this no more.." Ill be back tomorrow.. I was so beer buzzed out...LOL!
