If it just to make it run, then I'd carefully pry out the old ones with the engine in place and put in the rubber ones.

trying not to do more than needed but dont want them to start just going every so often. There are a few

I cannot get the ones out from under the engine mounts or above the bell housing. If it were only 1 freeze plug and it was accessible then by all means yes but its 4 or 5 of them in the worst spots so mind as well pull it
