Title jumping.... No thanks in this day and age. Tell the owner to get it in his name and you will go from there.....

Looking for some insight on this in case someone has been through this before. I have a chance to buy a pretty nice 69 Dart that is on a salvage title out of Ohio. The story is that it was a theft recovery. Not wrecked or damaged. I would be bringing the car back to PA and titling it here. I assume it would still have a salvage title? Are you able to specify it was a theft recovery and not a totaled vehicle? Does this type of thing really affect value on cars this old? I mean, most street rods that are built are on some type of reconstructed title. I will have a clear title in my name after I bring it back to PA but will I have trouble if I ever want to sell it myself some day? It’s the colors and options I have been looking for but just wanted a little educated advice before I pulled the trigger. Thank you!
I agree there are risks, but if the last title is signed technically it is like cash. Who ever holds it owned it.
A way to deal with this is to inlist an escrow company. They hold the cash till the title is cleared.
The whole reason he is willing to sell the car cheap is because he doesn’t want to mess with all the State of Ohio stuff. I think i am just going to pass. It’s a good deal but not so good that I want the headaches. And yes, who's name is on the title owns the car like said above. Also all of our BMV offices are closed right now so getting a title will take awhile. I just got a title done by mail but you have to have all your paper work correct and it take at least two weeks. The Wayne county office is the one I went through and I'm in Stark county. It's as mess right now. Good luck.

The guy basically wants to hand me the title with somebody else’s name on it and take the money and call it a deal. Leaving all the rest of it up to me. I heard about the car when I went to look at a 59 Dodge and passed on it. That guy told me about the Dart. I am walking away. The lure of a great deal clouded my judgment for a minute and in reality I am in the market for a 68-70 B body anyways.Simple solution, tell him you will buy it but you want him to put it in his name first. Just cause your name is written on the tittle doesn't make it yours in the state of Fl. You buy a car from me and I sign it as seller and you never transfer it or lose it. I can go get a Duplicate tittle and guess who's name is on the tittle?

If he is legit, he will be willing to transfer it into his name first.

I would never buy any car over 1,000 dollars from a title jump to begin with. If it is not worth the seller to put it in his name to resell it it is not worth buying it besides in Michigan it is illegal to title jump any car. You cant even scrap a car without the title being in your name here. The salvage for me would be 50 percent of value without a title jump. You were smart to pass. So, to make it even a little more convoluted, the seller never titled it in his name. The salvage title is in the name of the person he got it from. Car is priced under what the value should be (not half, but 7-10k under where it would normally be). The title is signed by the guy he got it from.
Salvage title ? is that where someone gets a stolen car towed, and then buys it from the salvage yard ?
