The lithium grease is great for that, so there must be another problem.
There either be a kink in the cable as mentioned or even the drive gear for it in the trans, or the speedo head itself.

You can also take it loose at the transmission end & push the cable up, towards the dash. If it is just riding on the back of the speedo & did not seat all the way, it can spin freely & cause a bounce.

there is a register on the speedo drive retainer that points to a tick mark on the case for what tooth drive you are using. They differ in diameters so the eccentric mount needs to be rotated to whatever your gear count it. you may be skipping in the gear end.

Part of the problem is our access and ability to replace a cable without removing the instrument. It doesn't even get looked at much less cleaning that input port before cramming another cable in there. If you are willing to pull the instrument, I can show and tell what to look for in determining if the problem is in the instrument or not.

Thanks for all the input..there are no kinks..i loaded the cable with grease and sprayed grease as well as i could into where the cable goes to the gauge i then put my drill on it and it worked fine so i took the car out and it seemed to b ok so i said lets see what happens when i get on it so i cracked it.....cable bouncin again.....

Alaskan TA ..Thanks for that idea may double check.....as far as taking the dash apart maybe over the winter its really not a priority just aggrivating.....thanks for all the help and ideas will let you know down the road how i make out...

I mixed graphite powder with white lithium grease and greased the cable with that. Then I dropped some of that liquid cable grease inside the speedo. It's basically just liquid graphite.

It'll hold for 6 months to a year and then I have to do it again.
