OK record guys here. I got a cheap turntable finally hooked up yesterday. Took a few records out and they are filthy, dirty, paper spots etc, whats the best way to clean them up to play? All are used well also no gems.
How far do you wanna get into it? And/or perhaps more importantly, how bad are they?

A cheap and easy thing is to simply wash them, gently, with distilled water, dishwashing detergent (e.g., Dawn) and a fine cloth (chamois, diaper, etc), being careful to, A) not get the labels wet, B) always wipe in the same direction as the grooves, and C) don't let them air dry.

There's a device sold that is essentially two rubber cups, with holes, that can be clamped together (through the center hole of the record) so that the labels don't get wet while cleaning manually, as per above. I've never owned one or used it, but I hear it works great. You can also "up" your game with a record clean machine (many types available, some better than others....and Christmas is coming!), or if you prefer- send them to me for cleaning (yes, I'd be happy to do this for you!), as I have a record cleaning machine that's pretty highly regarded.
