Damn - Is it straight grained? Next time I'm asked to do oak long shingles I'll be calling ya. When we were doing the huts at Morristown I was lucky to get 30 - 32" diameter. Not quite as straight grained as I would have liked but workable.

Wood density can be pretty variable even within species, and he didn't say how long its been seasoning.

Even so, it puts a severe weight load per sq in on the trailer. Like doing a karate chop on a stack of wood, it can snap a wood beam easily.

Plugged it in a calculator on woodweb and got 2309 for red oak...
I cut up a couple trees laat year that might have been 30" rounds at 18" long. Was workin a bit just to flip them around to split. The same calculator gives mee 300lbs on those...

Oven dry Black Oak has a specific gravity of 0.56 (Wood Handbook, FPL, 1974)
10 % moisture, 40 lbs per cu. ft.
1480 lbs. That's about as light as I can figure it

We cut it down, been dead for at least a year, possibly two, solid all the way thru
Might but this is first that's ever happened, we do this every year, multiple times but this is the first we've busted a wagon. And it was due to rot, not weight
just flipping them on end and nudging them on to the splitter. They may weight 400 maybe 500 pounds TOPS.

When I go in for blood work (JAK @ Jean) I will not even sit down and stand anywhere I can alone.
