Stop in for a cup of coffee

Morning!
-18/0°f.
Im trying to decide if i want to hunt for my spare door spring or run without it. Its a heavy door with a commercial opener. Guess i should rewind cables and see if brake will hold.
I need this like another hole in the head..

The AM radio station I listen to for the LA traffic reports on my road trips south is an ALL NEWS type station. Yesterday they were very adament about reminding the spectators going to the Rose Parade "NO UMBRELLAS! Pack your ponchos or rain coats!"

The compressor is original to the house, so about 20 years old. Thinking about getting an assessment on the size and maybe update/upgrade
Two options: Replace the compressor only, or replace the entire system. You may (or may not) be aware that that R410a has been "outlawed" (similar to the R-12 -> R134a for vehicles years ago), and it is now illegal to manufacture systems with R410a. However, you can still find and purchase R410a compressors. (Complete system? Good luck!)

If you're thinking of replacing the entire system, sit down and hold onto your checkbook, as the new R454b systems are outrageously priced. And you can't run a R454b condensing (outdoor) unit with an "old" R410a indoor coil.

I told my boss this past summer that I don't want anything to do with this new R454b **** (don't want to use it, don't want to quote it, don't want to be Tech Support for our Service Techs, etc), and it's just another reason for me to retire.

We still have an old R22 system. I asked for a compressor unit replacement quote but it needs a whole system replacement. We have lived here 30 years and it was old when we moved in.

My folks still have an R-22 system, and my father (an ex facilities maintenance guy) keeps that old Rheem unit spic & span!

I replaced their furnace about 10 years ago, but re-used the old R-22 a-coil. When I heard R410a was going away, and I bought that new system for our place, I also bought an R410a condensing unit and coil to match his "new-ish" furnace, and sometime this spring I'll get over there and install everything.

Sad to think about it like this, but he and mom are over 90, and I'm going to have to replace that condensing unit "eventually" anyway, when they pass and it comes time to sell their place....

The air handler is newer than the outdoor compressor so the idea is to leave the indoor bits in place and look at just the outdoor.

Ha! See my response right above, #658,032.

If/when that time comes (and if it's before I retire), feel free to give me a shout and I'll see what I can do to help you out.

Thanks Amigo.

I will for sure

There are a few infrastructure projects associated. I need to get the electrical panel upgraded. Annoying that if the washing machine starts the spin cycle, and I'm running the compressor in the garage, everything trips.

It's a split level and all the downstairs outlets are on the same circuits.

My son just sent me this, so remember it wasn't me that put us in the ditch.

Understood! I had to do something similar in our last two houses, and it's hard to have a firm budget when there can be so many variables.

FWIW, I plan on retiring no later than fall of '26. I'm more of an A/C guy, and like I told my boss, I don't want to go through another heating season. I may be out of here earlier, but that depends on how costly some of our "T & M" home projects are this spring. Regardless, once I retire I'll still have contacts, but I won't get as much of a Good Guy discount, so if you know upfront what you need.....

Anyway, I'll be here!

Our air handler is an old Carrier unit. The squirrel cage I would estimate at 5' long and 2" in diameter and the fins are spiraled, The system was originally a swamp cooler. The house was built in 21. Pretty deluxe for back then.

So Jodi literally had a quasi argument with her phone this morning. Part of her objectives this year given to her by her boss is to learn and figure out how to incorporate more AI into their profession. (She does mergers and acquisitions.) So she wakes up and her phone starts a dialogue with her about her poor night of sleep, she has just started PT from hip replacement surgery and just weaned off pain meds. Jodi tells her phone to be quiet but it does not comply, she then she trys to delete whatever app is talking to her to literally have her phone tell her the app is hiding in one of her programs and she will have to find it. That is why she cannot shut it down. It was nuts
Bizarre! My work is trying to push it too. Sorry, not gonna play with demonic chat boxes. God gave me a brain capable of critical thinking so I intend to use it as long as I can.
