stuff you're doing while at home

ok, on to the floor where the chimney breast used to come up from downstairs. basically we layed a bit of 3/4 ply over the area to cover the brickwork and built the wardrobes on that as a good level base. today ive been trimming the floorboards either side back to the next joist and laying bits of floorboards with packers on to the brickwork so i can lay a cut to fit bit of ply in place to complete the floor all on the came level. we ordered new laminate flooring last night so that's my next job when it arrives.
oh and i've just bought another a/c system to fit in our bedroom like we have in the lounge. it's the 2 part setup like offices have with a unit outside on the wall with pipes going in to the wall unit inside. i wouldn't be without the one in the lounge when it's hot like today, but i guess it's spoilt me.

that reminds me i had an electrical outlet out in the room now the wardrobes are gone. it was on the chimney breast so i reattached it to the end of the wardrobes but the cables won';t reach to the wall. i put the wires into a junction box and ran a new longer cable and refitted the outlet socket to that ready to go into the wall (i'll recess it in flush).

i've fitted a ceiling fan light in my back room (office?) this morning, much better than the noisy pedestal fan we had there. also ordered 20 x 1 metre lengths of rebar off ebay to reinforce the 'footings' along the side of my new garage over the road. i't's about 2 foot 6 inches higher at what will be floor level compared to the other side of the gravel boards where the garden used to slope down towards the house. i'm going to lift the top (3rd) gravel board up slip some steel plate with a 2 inch lip over the second and drop the 3rd back onto the steel. the steel will get fixed to the rebar which i'll drive down into the ground about a foot back from the gravel boards and it'll all form part of the 'footings' stopping the slab pushing/bulging the gravel boards out onto the garden below. as the slab and footings will be pushing down onto the plate that's hooked over the gravel boards it can't go anywhere.

Well, my turn. The last few weekends, cause that’s all I’m home for, I’ve been building a deck around a two person hot tub. There is only two of us who live here now so it will do! This started out with a bunch of free 2x10’s I got........that expanded a little! I basically have the roofing material left to go but guess what. It’s not in stock, anywhere! Oh well, in time.....
I Wouldn’t mind doing this for a living but I’m too much of a perfectionist so I wouldn’t make any money at it!

back to the 'new' garage over the road, last night i marked a level line round the boundary fence so i can start pegging the ground for shuttering to lay the footings. last night you ask? yes i bought a cheap rotating laser level off of ebay which is cheap. ok indoors but out in the sun not so much. and then there was the battery saga, it takes 4 c type 1.5 volt batteries which is all well and good but i only had aa's or aaa's. aa's are the same length but much slimmer. what do you do when you're impatient and you only need to mark out this one job? roll some cardboard round each aa battery and they fit a treat. so over to the 'plot' with the level on it's tripod and a torch to see the bubbles so i could level the level and a sharpie to mark the concrete posts all round the perimeter. job's a goodun.
today's house update..... we're changing the radiator in our bedroom for a tall narrow one to give more wall space for the new furniture so planning ahead (like i do) i ordered new rads for the kitchen and dining room too. my justification is 1, i need to finish grouting behind one of them 2, the other ones got a rusty patch 3, they'll match the other new ones in the lounge and hallway and 4, my mate only has to drain the central heating system once to change all 3 rad's (the sizes are slightly different so there's pipework to alter).

i've been umming and ahhing about whether to a, get one of those 'we mix you lay' concrete companies in or b, use my mixer and do it myself at my own pace. not one to rush things i've opted for b, so i've ordered 5 bulk bags of ballast and 40 bags of cement to be delivered wednesday so i can get the footings done. it should be more than enough........ we'll see. my daughter's volunteered her boyfriend as labour too as he's still off work, result.

Well, that’s a relief. That Suntuf roof polycarbonate is not cheap. Man, projects always grow. Whether it is a car or other does not matter. They just escalate. Just paint to match existing left........and that is her specialty!

this evening i had a bonfire over the road, you know it just wasn't hot enough already. all the stingers and other sundry weeds i pulled up last month had dried nicely so didn't take long at all to crackle and pop into oblivion. tomorrow the ballast and cement arrives and friday a local reclamation yard are delivering a dozen used 13ft scaffold boards so i can get the footings shuttered up ready for concrete. it's all go you know

this morning the delivery came bright and early, i hadn't even had a cuppa
icon_eek.gif

the driver was helpful as usual getting them into what was an awkward area under a tree. the depot had decided in their wisdom not to put the cement on a pallet, ohhhh no that would be far too easy
icon_shake.gif
instead they put 8 bags in each bulk bag of ballast on top of the ballast
icon13.gif
. now i planned to get the cement put on my drive as it'll go in the garage (read dry) 'til we use it. now i had to get 1000kg of cement across the road (downhill) and into my garage. 10 trips, 100kgs a go in my trusty wheelbarrow later and i was really 'needing' that first cup of tea
icon_smile.gif
dawn laughed when i came indoors, she thought i was trying to be a smurf! the blue from the labels on the cement bags had stuck to my front, arms and hands where i'd got a bit sweaty. so the tea had to wait while i had a shower, but it was very nice all the same.
next job, shuttering when the boards arrive friday.

Just got a 20ft storage container delivered about a week ago. It all this heat and humidity, I've been building shelves inside it to clear out the garage and cellar. The Dart will go in the garage and the restoration will start within the next couple of months. I'll start another 69 Dart restoration thread.

did you insulate the walls and ceiling before putting the shelves in?

today i ordered tek screws for the steel cladding and breathable membrane to go under the cladding. all i need now is to work out how much timber i'll need for sheeting rails.

Sittin' here diddlin on the internet and trying to find some TV to watch.......AND HOPING MY RIPS stop hurting

back at home i got the stairs and the hole in the bedroom ceiling covered over with plasterboard. now it's ready for my mate to render and plaster at the end of the month.

had my second day this week digging the 'footings' over the road. i've got the worst 2 sides (lots of brick rubble in the dirt) dug and shuttered ready for concrete. the other 2 won't involve as much digging as they are mostly above ground where the area sloped that way slightly. i'm hoping to be mixing concrete by the end of this coming week.

Finished excavating, finished fence and gate, laid sod.
Had 45' spruce removed behind shop(hope to extend it at some point).
Back to work to relax....
