This is the future of cars I've warned everyone about

-
Speaking of tech, I have the folks whose cars I will work on keep pocket memo books in the glove box for each car to record mx. I got tired of the multitude of pens they have in there being dried up and started replacing them with reliable pencils.

Big brother is watching.
what if you "wrapped" the car in an aluminum infused wrap? would it cancel any signals in and/or out? guess the glass would need the same treatment. or put a faraday shield around any computer in the vehicle. has anybody taken an EMF reading inside a new car? just ramblin' off the top of my bald head...

Why do any of you keep buying new cars?
Just curious..
I was thinking the same thing. Maybe they like to complain. The financial guy Dave Ramsey says that the only people who should buy new cars are bazillionaires, and they should also only pay cash up front; unless they like to have perpetual car payments on their back until the day they die.

I put "the difference" between what full coverage would cost, and the difference of what low deductibles would cost, and the difference between what a new car would cost....

...into a "big pile o' money" separate bank account.

Hence the term "quasi-self insured".

It's not for everyone, and it takes a special kind of discipline.

...but it sure helps with major expenses like buying a car, repairing a car, major appliance replacement, and even helped finance additional rental properties.

This way, I keep my money instead of a bank or insurance company, and I don't have to hope they agree to pay out. Plus I'm free to determine how and when to use it.
I, too put money back. I've heard all kinds of stories about rental properties and it can be a pain in the butt and you can get lucky and have good renters. Here in Missouri it can Take months to get them out and in the meantime they aren't paying you anything and they are tearing up your place.

That's all "part of the business".

Also not for everyone.

...but two residential rentals pay 100% of our bills, after they pay for themselves.

...and the one we've had the longest got paid off by one long term tenant. The other has a $600 payment on a value of 240,000 and rents for $1845, and we make two extra payments a year.

My "mom and pop", car guy friendly, 23 unit self storage gives us "spendin' money" and is paid off, thanks to that "not paying full coverage, not paying low deductible, not paying for a new car" account.
That account also helped us with the down payment for the second rental.

I've had to come up with "outside the box" solutions to almost everything I've wanted to do in life.
I have never lived in a house that had a garage.
...but as of 2012, I have a 4 stall 22x80 "shop" .5 miles away, with down payment WAY less than building something in my back yard, and payoff provided by "other people".

I bought two new cars in 2023. Walked in, wrote checks....been enjoying them, since. Both have collector car status with my insurance company=lower rates.

Simple! More auto technology means higher priced cars, more costly repairs, more profit for company and dealers, when AI takes all jobs and the L***** give us universal income,,, then the world has all gone completely to H***! :BangHead: :BangHead:  :thankyou:

Theres some kind of structural " bumper" under the plastic. Its all designed to absorb the impact, break away and be replaced by the collision center. This is why people have fender benders in parking lots, look at the plastic that sprung back see a scratch and think theres no damage but the plastic bumper under neath is usually broken in two. Everything about car design is regulated by the industry. For example take a 67 Dart alot of them had low back seats no headrests by 69- 70 they all had headrests but they are head restraints to reduce whiplash clams that were popular at the time from being rear ended. The insurance companies get tired of paying out its the same today in that regard

Most modern bumpers are either air cells in plastic.....or Styrofoam.

No, I do not need any more safety features. In fact, I'd like less.

Bring back "natural selection".

My wife would hit deer then say " cant ya just get a headlight for it?" Id say " yes but it neefs everything thats broken behind the headlight...been there a few times with deer LOL!

Let's face it "new cars suck" The money right out of your wallet LOL They are overpriced , over engineered pieces of crap with electrical everything designed to fail. Perfect example was my Audi A6. Shortly after I bought it the "BRAKE PAD WARNING" light popped up on the dash. I thought how bad can it be to put brakes on it ? I did it myself (still $600) with genuine Audi parts. Even though the job was done correctly I couldn't get the light to go out. Simple repairs simply don't exist anymore. I had to go to an Audi mechanic to have the light reset.

Surprisingly, the bumpers on my 2015 Renegade are thick sheet metal formed and layered into rectangular tubes.

The Mopar brand trailer hitch replaces the rear bumper with a 5/16" thick square tube, that would make a 50's car bumper blush.

I consider those safety advancements as features without digital interference. Volvo and Mercedes Benz was really good at that. My old Mercedes with its soft squishy seats and head rest had been designed to not only hold me, but also absorbed the impact. I was rear ended pretty hard, but by mechanical design the car did what it was designed to and protect the occupant/s. My head whipped back and hit the head rest, then the seat gave way a bit absorbing more of my transferring weight. My beloved 42 year old daily driver may have been totalled, but it perhaps saved me from greater injuries. I had whiplash that took about a year of treatment, but I have experienced the proof that cars can be safe without the annoying computers. Also, yes lol, my bumpers were thicker than the front bumper on the semi truck that rear ended me.

Warning! Strong language and cuss words will be used by me. There is no cussing in the video.

For years I have told people about the issues and future issues of modern cars, but those stupid fucks don't believe me and think it's bullshit, even though I have the automotive training they don't have and have seen the potential problems. Drive by wire issues, electric power steering problems, dangerous auto start stop situations, I've seen it years ago. By design plenty of the computer controlled systems can be dangerous if there is a failure.
So, why am I talking about this now? 318WillRun @318willrun released a video about a situation where the whole computer controlled system just randomly failed possibly due to an update. According to 318WillRun the vehicle that had the catastrophic failure from a software update done with a cell phone, however I can tell you that it can get much worse than that. Many newer cars don't need to update via an app on your phone, but will instead use a satellite connection to automatically do updates from the manufacturer. That's right, no user action from you is required to completely **** up your day and put you in danger.
Of course some of us know about these type issues happening, but the problem is that it's not talked about enough. The other problem is that these issues are gaslighted by the manufacturer and media who will put the blame on the user or anything else not in direct relation to the manufacturer. Most people are now just too ******* stupid to believe the truth, even when it comes out of the mouth of an educated mechanic. So, that is why this topic should be talked about more often, especially now that companies are using AI to write code for them that could possibly(I'm sure it is) be already in use from the auto manufacturers. (For those who are not keeping up with the AI disasters, companies big and small are having issues because they put there trust in AI, which is why Windows 11 updates keep breaking things, lol.)

Watch 318WillRun's video and other videos on the related topic. If possible, get other automotive youtubers to talk about it too. This is not the only time this situation has happened or has been talked about, but it should be treated like old news every time it does happen.

If anyone has some time, and want to read the testimonies on this stuff, read the comments under my video. You'll find that many of these 2–3-year-old cars (that would be a new car to me... LOL) are having some wonky stuff happening.

I have some more stories.

One time my grandmother rented a Ford Fusion while here car was in the body shop. She claimed that there was something wrong with the rental and that the engine kept turning off. At first I thought she did not understand the auto start stop feature, but then she said that nothing would happen when she put the pedal down. So on the trip back to Enterprise, I had noticed the start stop function would malfunction at random times. Engine shuts off at a traffic light, then step on the gas pedal and nothing happens. Yep it's ******* borked, imagine this happening on hill will cars behind you.

Another one is when I worked at repair shop and first saw electric power steering and it was not the kind that operates a pump. This was some GM Piece of crap car, like a Saturn or something I can't remember. Anyway, the complaint was that while making a turn the steering would feel like it's locking up sometimes. That's right, it was that hard to turn... WHILE THE CAR WAS STILL MOVING. The way this death trap worked was by having an electric motor with a gear reduction attached to the steering column to provide power steering. If there was an issue with the motor, which there was in this case, or some polarity switching fuckery, this could become a very dangerous thing.

This next one was probably when I was starting to hate the new technology in cars. A customer had big Dodge Ram with a Cummins diesel, I forgot what year it was, but it was from the early CAN bus era. Problem was that one and only one headlight would not work. Everything was checked on this truck, but nothing stood out as an issue, however the scanner would point read an issue with the BCM. I don't remember the code, but it was some sort of malfunction that could not currently be fixed unless you replaced the BCM and reflashed it. The funny part was, if you clear the history, the non working headlamp would work again, then 5 minutes later it would turn off. In this particular case a new BCM was needed and then it would need a flash, which would cost around $1200 or so to do at the time.

I'll put one more. This time we have an international semi. The batteries kept dying because the marker lights would just randomly turn on. Going over everything, replacing the switch and eliminating certain parts of the circuit and eventually the whole thing to isolated things would prove that the issue here was the BCM. Ok, maybe a reflash might fix the issue, except the scanner was having issues communicating to the BCM. Ah ha, it's borked. Our solution was... bypass the BCM and wire up a new switch, still using most of the same wiring. This has been working fine for years now. **** you fancy technology!

Why do any of you keep buying new cars?
Just curious..
This kind of nonsense is why my newest cars are a 2002 Dodge Intrepid and 2002 Neon. As long as parts are available I can fix just about anything that goes wrong on them and I don’t have to deal with any of the ridiculous tech.

Computers, and monitors that can be used against you by the cops, insurance companies, even lawyers, and whom ever else.
Who knows who the data, and even conversations are being shared with, or why?
I also don't want "assistance" driving my car, or breaking, or steering, lane drift, or slowing my down while I'm on Speed Control, or locking me in or out of my own car!

These are just some on the reasons I'm working toward making my '68, my daily driver.

I've driven across this country countless times with out computers, or fuel injection, telephones, or even Nav. and I STILL keep a Rand McNally Road atlas in my trucks/cars/suv's/whatever... When all else fails, I can still use a damn map!

the plan is to get back to driving, without all of the bells and whistles that didn't exist in the 60's and 70's.
Hell, my first car was a '57 Ford Fairlane 500. The options list in that car consisted of 1. Heater, 2. AM Radio. Yes, they were options in 1957. I bought the car in 1965, and drive it every day for 3 years before getting a 1968 Hemi Road Runner - and besides the Hemi, (an $800 option in 1968) and heater ( which you could delete back then) the options consisted of Front power disc brakes, the 833 trans, and the Dana.
All of the extra gusseting and crap were part of the Hemi package, as I recall.

The only "new" vehicle I plan to keep is my wife's, Toyota Highlander, and my 2008 GMC Sierra, because it's worth more to me than anyone else.

Don't need 800 hp, don't need EFI, don't need, nav, or "infotainment", or any of that BS.

A carb'd small block ( or even a slant!), a 4 speed, power steering, power brakes, and a radio, and I'm set.

^^^Sad part is there will be millions of younger drivers come along that will never experience the thrill and enjoyment and driving like us "older" types experienced back before all the tech.
I carry a state road map in the glove box of our driver to show the wife exactly when and how her "smart" phone GPS things f*****up! Our 2014 every day driver pickup has such on the trucks screen on the dash but we have never tried to use it!!!!!! Old, stupid and/or both!!!! :BangHead: :BangHead: :BangHead: :BangHead:

Most people beleive " new cars dont break down" and when they do " its under warranty" to the best of my knowledgs these are a couple reasons why peoole buy new. They also think dealer techs are the best people around who can fix it

buddy had a 2 year old korean car. hit water, slid off the road. pulled it out and drove it home
wapped off the front and rear plastics.
insurance had him take it to the dealer. they totalled it for the external sensors.
apparently they can't realign them to start with, they are built in a jig,
come directly from korea, and the cost of complete assemblies exceeded the cars value,
and the car had to be destroyed, per hynd and insurance, unsafe vehicle. he couldn't leave with it
he was so mad

I was looking over the cost of parts some years ago and even with fuel economy of about 18 or so miles per gallon, unless I'm overlooking something my 75 Duster will be the least expensive car I own to operate. My 98 Dodge Ram 2500 with a Cummins would be a close second. It's required no major maintenance since I purchased it back in 97. Tires, belts, batteries, and a couple of sensors. Last fall after twenty seven years the alternator died. I was impressed enough at it's longevity that I'm having it overhauled and keeping it. The truck still has its original clutch after 210,000 miles.

There are reasons our auto insurance is as high as it is!!!
New cars are like new vacuum cleaners, made out of junk plastic and throw aways!!! One just costs idiot money, the other not near so bad! :BangHead:
