Towing with a 66 Barracuda with a newer & rebuilt 904

-
I've had my car for 6 years, built it from scratch without instructions (and a little help from my friends) and have located all required parts on my own. I have been in'n'out of the auto industry for over 23 years. This is not my 1st classic car, probably won't be my last. I've learned from some of the best over the years, learned a lot on my own. Worked on an array of vehicles from a 1932 BMW on up to newer tractor trailors. I've run race teams, I've turrned wrenches on race teams, I've even done some racing myself. I have an appreciation for a wide range of vehicles and their capabilities. However, based on my experience with this attempt to gain information from a seemingly appropriate source, it seems that some things never change.

Online, certain people refuse to read ALL of the words and respond appropriately. Moderators choose to protect someone that has been around longer and punish the new kid that doesn't take crap. Someone that is "proven knowledgable" is allowed to be a jerk without consequence. I really don't have any tolerance for this sort of behavior. A smart move by the site owner and the moderators would be to do their jobs and moderate, by keeping threads on-topic and removing the jerks, but as seems to be the trend across many, many industries, people don't really want to do their jobs, and that's just the way it is - and the good people suffer for it.

Yes, I'm in Las Vegas. For those that aren't familiar with the city, it has one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation, the least amount of diverse industry and one of the overall lowest education levels in the US (if I recall, this area has less than a 50% high school grad rate ... and many of those must take remedial reading and math IF they go to college). Idaho isn't much better, based on stats and what I've heard from people that have lived there. Luckily I'm not from here, and I've found a way out.

So, after 4 years of hell here, I'd be damned if I'm going to pass up an opportunity I have. If it means I need to do something others doesn't think is "smart", I really don't care. I've done lots of things others called me nutz or stupid for doing (can we say solo cross ocuntry motorcycle trip, purchasing a 1966 Barracuda that needs assembly, opening my own business in the racing industry, etc ...), yet things always work out just fine. If I listened to all those idiots that told me not to do something because of x,y, or z ... I'd of missed out on some of the best experiences of my life. Instead, I tend to look at the situation from all angles, identify the weak spots and address them and plan accordingly. Not being overly familiar with automatic transmissions happened to have been my weak spot, since I'm far more familiar with manual tramsmissions, so I asked a a seemingly simple question. This was NOT an open door for a know-it-all jerk to let loose. At the least, I'd expect good moderators to keep that guy in check, apparently that was overly optimistic.

Thank you to the guys & gals who have been polite and helpful (if you'd like to contact me, there are 3 nice people on here that do have my email addy, but they shall remain nameless). Those that have chosen to be condescending, insulting and bullying ... go bother someone else. I didn't ask for opinions on towing, I asked about transmission concerns - something several people on here seem to have missed entirely.

... and for my favorite bully who can't think outside his own little box: not everyone goes to law school to become a lawyer. There are numerous reasons one would pursue a law degree just as there are numerous uses for a law degree.

Best of luck to you all ... I'll save the moderators the hassle & delete my account on my own ... if it can be done.

Aloha!

Well dang...Hate to see this thread go like it did. Sorry I can't help with the transmission question not my forte...I guess you could ask a transmission specialist in the area and maybe they could give you some insight?

Hopefully this aloha isn't goodbye!

I hear lots of blather of someone "bullying", harrassing , and possibly harming small rodents. However, so far the only posts I see where someone is be-littling others, bashing moderators, calling people names, making fun of places people live and intellect of individuals is coming direct from you. Your own posts are exactly what you are complaining of if not worse. When you post something in a open thread you are going to get comments and opinons a lot of which may not apply directly to your question or post. The person you are all upset with for merely commenting for your safety reasons. If your not concerned with your safety then maybe consider the other people around you. He was suggesting that it wasnt a good idea. No where did he harrass or bully you. That is all a "assumption" you read into it. I for one would thank that person for being concerned and move on. The path you took to supossedly take care of this matter is quite out of hand and seemingly deliberate. Using a poking stick to stir the fire and see what flares up. There are hundereds of car sites out there. With your demeanor and attitude I am sure you will see most of them.

Oh and on your transmission question...... The trans will be fine.... the rest of the car will suffer as you slowly destroy a classic automobile.... but you already know that.... you have done your homework.

-RPM ( a moderator who clearly doesnt care about anything or anyone and lets the site run rampant with fools and theives) Thats why were paid the big bucks.

Children... Oh sorry, I thought this was the word association thread.

Best of luck to you all ... I'll save the moderators the hassle & delete my account on my own ... if it can be done.

Please don't leave us, I want to hear of your tale of travels across this great country, with the overgrown goKart in tow. :)

I would still reconsider subframe connectors though. It will add to the value of the car and it will make your drive more pleasurable if not safer.

Good luck and God speed on all of your travels.

David

Wow, did this thread go south!!

For all of your expertise and knowledge in the auto industry, I'm surprised that you needed to ask a question at all. But in fairness to you, I don't believe anyone is very knowledgable about how to tow a CRX across country with a 66 Cuda.

I agree with the poster who commented about thinking of the other person when attempting to do something unknown such as this. You don't know what is going to happen, you said so yourself. You are willing to take the risk with your own well being, thats fine, but what about the well being of others should something go wrong?? Have you considered a panic stop in the rain on a winding road with drum brakes that may fade or be saturated with water??

And to attack another member who is trying to point out the dangers of doing so?? Well, sounds like you're leaving Las Vegas AND FABO a little better place!!! JMO, Geof

Mr. Dart_Doctor,
If you would go back and re-read my original post that created the thread ... I'm sure you'll find that I was not asking if anyone thought this was a good idea. I was asking about transmissions. Period.
Well like i said we try to look after are own here ! I hope you make it safe . Best of luck to ya . But you have to understand what the guys are trying to do HELP YOU ,If you dont want that kind of brother hood so to speak then I guess see ya :-k

We once flat towed a 65 mustang with a 64 Nova 6 cylinder. Bumper hitch kept sliding back and forth about 20 inches on the nova's bumper. It wasn't far only Montana to California. And my brother drove he was pretty experienced at 17, I was 14... My dad would have drove but he was driving a 70 Tradesman 100 with a slant six and 3 on the tree pulling a car hauler with a 48 olds both loaded to the hilt with our crap. We lost each other somewhere in Oregon, that's when my dad freaked out, not the fact the mustang swayed stripe to stripe down the interstate.
Aww the good old days. Now I wonder if I should put dual or single axle brakes on my 22 foot pontoon boat behind my Duramax crew... My dad's still crazy...

66CudaGirl,

I am sure you will be fine. I think most of the naysayers here have done little towing and are like cops (and mothers) who like to blame the victim when something happens. Many towbars are sold, I see people using them all the time, and I don't see rolled-over cars with towbars littering the highway. Your Honda is much lighter than the Barracuda, just load the trunk well in the A-body. Re overheating, all that matters is the power output of the engine and the air speed. The engine and tranny doesn't know whether it is pulling a vehicle or going up a steep grade. It doesn't take much HP to pull on level ground. Just slow to 50 mph on steep grades and use your right turn signal (since no flasher). We also tried to drive at night since pretty hot on I-40 that last week of Aug. If you get worried about the coolant temp, turn on the heater and roll down the windows. Not comfortable, but it does aid engine cooling.

We did have a problem, but from a driver who rear-ended our trailer at 2 am in Ash Fork, AZ. No insurance and the Patroller didn't even cite him. Add stick-on reflectors to the Honda if you can.

A transmission on a car should be capable of pulling 2000 pounds on flat land. on steep hills about 1000.
But it all depends on how many miles that trans has. A good cooler with fan,and trans temp gauge would be a plus. Also make sure your tire pressure is always good. you don't want it fishing around. Brakes would be the concern going down hill. Good luck in your Voyage.

Oh....Cry me a river Justin Timberlake !!!!!

Throw a hitch on the thing and go !!!!!

...it wouldn't hurt to post the route you are going..and the expected dates...I suspect there are lots of FABO members that would help if something happens... I have met many find folk here at FABO and have had very pleasant dealings with meny more across the internet..

BTW, I know a lot of lawyers ...my wife has been a witness in several suits...they are bullies and thick skinned in the courtroom and dispositions..that is what they get paid for...you may find this row tough to hoe...just a thought..

Best of luck.

I am pretty sure we will never know as I don't think she is active member any more.

I remember this thread early on, I never checked back, sad to see how it went.

She sure turned it up a notch, talk about excitable. Sheesh. Lasted all of one thread, that's pretty sad.

273 and I have had our differences, but he's not evil. He just knows what he knows and sticks by it, for better or worse. Gotta respect that.

Indeed. He can come across harsh at times, but tony? Is a nice and knowledgeable member and was correct in his thought

Not Tony, LOL. I had a line out of an old "Tony Rome" detective movie, AKA Frank Sinatra

Not a bad movie. Sinatra made a few fair movies. 1967, Jill St John a hearthrob at the time
