I never knew this about these guys until a friend forwarded this to me today..........

Captain Kangaroo passed away on January 23, 2004 at age 76 , which is odd, because he always looked to be 76. (DOB: 6/27/27 ) His death reminded me of the following story.

Some people have been a bit offended that the actor, Lee Marvin, is buried in a grave alongside 3 and 4-star generals at Arlington National Cemetery His marker gives his name, rank (PVT) and service (USMC). Nothing else.. Here's a guy who was only a famous movie star who served his time, why the heck does he rate burial with these guys? Well, following is the amazing answer:

I always liked Lee Marvin, but didn't know the extent of his Corps experiences.

In a time when many Hollywood stars served their country in the armed forces often in rear echelon posts where they were carefully protected, only to be trotted out to perform for the cameras in war bond promotions, Lee Marvin was a genuine hero.. He won the Navy Cross at Iwo Jima There is only one higher Naval award.. The Medal Of Honor!

If that is a surprising comment on the true character of the man, he credits his sergeant with an even greater show of bravery.

Dialog from 'The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson': His guest was Lee Marvin. Johnny said, 'Lee, I'll bet a lot of people are unaware that you were a Marine in the initial landing at Iwo Jima ..and that during the course of that action you earned the Navy Cross and were severely wounded.'

'Yeah, yeah... I got shot square in the bottom and they gave me the Cross for securing a hot spot about halfway up Suribachi. Bad thing about getting shot up on a mountain is guys getting' shot hauling you down. But, Johnny, at Iwo . I served under the bravest man I ever knew... We both got the Cross the same day, but what he did for his Cross made mine look cheap in comparison. That dumb guy actually stood up on Red beach and directed his troops to move forward and get the hell off the beach. Bullets flying by, with mortar rounds landing everywhere and he stood there as the main target of gunfire so that he could get his men to safety. He did this on more than one occasion because his men's safety was more important than his own life.
That Sergeant and I have been lifelong friends. When they brought me off Suribachi we passed the Sergeant and he lit a smoke and passed it to me, lying on my belly on the litter and said, 'Where'd they get you Lee?' 'Well Bob... If you make it home before me, tell Mom to sell the outhouse!'
Johnny, I'm not lying, Sergeant Keeshan was the bravest man I ever knew.
The Sergeant's name is Bob Keeshan. You and the world know him as Captain Kangaroo.'

On another note, there was this wimpy little man (who passed away) on PBS, gentle and quiet. Mr. Rogers is another of those you would least suspect of being anything but what he now portrays to our youth. But Mr. Rogers was a U.S. Navy Seal, combat-proven in Vietnam with over twenty-five confirmed kills to his name. He wore a long-sleeved sweater on TV, to cover the many tattoos on his forearm and biceps. He was a master in small arms and hand-to-hand combat, able to disarm or kill in a heartbeat

After the war Mr. Rogers became an ordained Presbyterian minister and therefore a pacifist. Vowing to never harm another human and also dedicating the rest of his life to trying to help lead children on the right path in life. He hid away the tattoos and his past life and won our hearts with his quiet wit and charm.

America's real heroes don't flaunt what they did; they quietly go about their day-to-day lives, doing what they do best. They earned our respect and the freedoms that we all enjoy.
Look around and see if you can find one of those heroes in your midst.
Often, they are the ones you'd least suspect, but would most like to have on your side if anything ever happened.

Take the time to thank anyone that has fought for our freedom. With encouragement they could be the next Captain Kangaroo or Mr. Rogers.

Thanks for this post. Lee Marvin was one of the great actors in my simple mind and yes Cpt Kangaroo, i watched him as a kid not knowing of his service and bravery and not like most, i held Mr Rogers in high regards not knowing of his abilities and service. He was good for kids and very sincere. Thanks again.

Why is everyone so bent on disproving the story? Regardless of whether it is true. We should all be thanking our boys for giving you the right to doubt them and the safety to live in so we can complain about them. I don't know whether Lee served at Iwo or Saipan, but they were both nasty fights. And awards and service dates are public record now. So if you are really that pessimistic about heroes, dig deeper and let us know the truth. And include legitimate references not some rumormill crap.

I don't know why people feel the need to invent stories about specific veterans. There were a number of famous and later-to-be famous people who served in the Armed Forces. There were a lot more people who never became famous.

Clark Gable did fly a few bomber missions as a gunner, but was quickly put to work making morale and training films for the Army Air Corps.

Actor Jimmy Stewart was actually a B-24 bomber pilot and flew a number of combat missions before advancing in rank and position in the bomb squadron and group. I believe he actually retired as a general in the Air Force Reserves.

Actor Eddie Albert was a Lieutenant in the Navy on a service ship. He was actually tasked with pulling dead and wounded from the water around Tarawa during that landing in 1943.

There are plenty of famous people who served in combat and never brought it up in public unless asked.

Yes we should give thanks for deeds done in the service of this country. For example my step father who left college (2 months from graduation) to go to Vietnam. They wanted to make him an officer... He wanted to be a regular soldier.

He was shot in the left side, the bullet passing through his body, exiting his right side and destroying his left elbow. From 69-85 he didn't have an elbow and used a brace to hold his arm. In 85 he finally had a bone graft connecting his lower arm to his upper arm.

Point being.... Credit should go only to those that deserve it. We don't want 15 year olds riding around skateboards with an e-bay Medals of Honor do we?

You need to draw a line at fact vs fiction.

Whether these stories are true or not, I am still very proud of all who served. I cannot believe it has been almost 22 years since Lee Marviin passed. What a great actor.

OK guys. I gotta recant most of my initial post. I was a bit hasty on the draw and just posted what was sent to me by a friend here at work.
Doing a little followup on snopes.com found the following:
* Lee Marvin was wounded in action on Saipan but did not receive the Navy Cross;
* Captain Kangaroo was a Marine but did not see action as he enlisted right around his 18th birthday and it was too late in WWII to see any action; and
* Fred Rogers (Mr. Rogers) never served in the military

Regardless, it's a good reminder that heroes risk their lives for others every day. And many heroes have given their lives so we may live as we do today.

All three of those guys are heroes in my book anyway. They put their talents out there for the world. Fred Rogers composed and played all the music on his show. He and Mr. Keehan devoted their lives to helping kids.

If I hear any war stories about Fran from Kookla, Fran, & Ollie I will be sure to verify them.

Make sure you check out Mr. Green Jeans too. ;)

I became sceptical when I read of Fred Rogers' tatoos because I saw him roll up his sleeves and in short sleeves many times and never saw a tatoo.

Check snopes.com, I was caught on this one too. It doesn't make their accomplishments any smaller. I don't know where this originated but it has been around.

Since when is calling out BS a bad thing? If something isn't true then it should be pointed out and corrected, not defended. There's no disrespect at all here. If anything, clearing away the misinformation and presenting the actual truth is far more respectful to the lives of these men.

For the record... I was not looking to disproving the story. I thought the story about Mr. Rogers was cool and I wanted to know more.

That's when I found it wasn't true. It was a bummer.

Dudeman does not want the truth to get in the way of a good story!
Ask him to tell you about his 8 second, slant 6 powered pickup truck that gets 30 mpg while towing a camper!
