after pulling the 540 to put in the green dart
finally got to see if the 6 would fit

first changed the trans from a fixed yoke to a slip yoke
trans came out of an Airport Tug

034_zpsymon3do3.jpg

Used the trans mount to locate the engine front to rear
eng/trans was moved back 12" in it's past life

Surprised how easy it went in
removed the p/s, vacuum pump, and A/c >> not needed

now just have to make motor mounts
then pull it back out
make some engine mods, clean everything up/ paint

Vary COOL i thought you were puting in a turbo Slant Six.

Vary heavy, the 4bt might have been a lot easier, but what a power house it will be. Time for some vary TALL gears in the rear now!!!!!:burnout:

thanks

parts were just laying around
just had to see, if it would fit

have had the car over 20 years
with many different combo's

last was 540-727-dana with 31 x 14.5 -15
already has spool and 35 spline axles, 1350 joints
full cage

with the engine set back (12")
the front end set about the same height as before with the 540 in there

gonna scale it, see what the true front weight is.

gonna be a 1/8 mile racer

leave the 4.56 for a pass or two
run it up against the governor (3200)
use it as a throttle stop

see what happens
then start gearing up until it hits the governor at the finish line

So you have installed the 3200 gov spring, nice up grade on them first gen!

What turbo you going to run?

Intercooler in the plans?

this will be a winter project
engine is a 1989> non I/C
so far 3200 spring
match port the exhaust and stock turbo
port the head, grind the valves
advanced the pump gear 1 tooth

gonna let my friend Brad > owns a diesel shop
guide me on turbo and other options

gathered a few more pieces

throttle cable
kick down cable for the trans
trans shield

air filter even fits under the hood

018_zpsci5v3mlv.jpg

cut the exhaust pipe> don't need it all
gonna take the shortest route>
a hole in the section of metal between the rear of the hood and
in front of the windshield

roll cage- pics, solid, no saggin / flexin

Get a holeset 35 (AkA out of a 1994- 2002 dodge diesel) it's a bigger turbo, has a waste gate and basically bolts up. if your not going to intercool it, you will have to grind on it a little bit to get the compressor rubber hose on it.

Personally, as a drag car, i would NOT intercool it, and just add water/meth injection to it.

I had 3 of these HS 35' turbos but when with the truck when i sold it. it was a 1991

Very interesting project. Good thing that car has that cage so all the torque doesn't twist it all to hell. Good thing it's going to be a drag car not a daily driver, you'd have some hearing loss after a little while.

About 20 years back I swapped an 89 engine like you have into a 75 B300 van. It was kind of a stuff job. Took a little doing but after getting everything sorted out it was a good reliable driver, got 20+ mpg on the road, made an awesome tow vehicle. It was a little loud inside though.

To help me figure things like the wiring out I bought the factory shop manual for the 89 pickup as well as the diesel supplement book, it was a big help since I had no diesel experience before that.

According to that book that engine weighs around 900 lb. Just the crankshaft weighs 125 lb.

Good luck with this, I'm gonna follow this to see how it turns out.

slowly moving forward

exhaust finished> removable stack
the CTD truck Radiator- fit pretty good

working on finishing up the engine mounts
tie them into the roll cage

May not get done before the tracks close

Keep raining here,
may have to put the "Mud Grips" on
make a few laps around the field

i used engine mounts to secure the engine
(from my ramcharger)
will be adding a tube from the roll bar to the engine mount

001_zps8xjeme8j.jpg

003_zpsf2tqqped.jpg

welded the 2 x 3 tube 360*
then add a 1 x 3

011_zpsbvxbthch.jpg

017_zpsmycfxvy9.jpg

used a "T" shape extrusion to make the trans cooler mounts

004_zps390vnwh8.jpg

got the gear linkage and throttle hooked up

Don't know why I had to Tamper with the engine settings

while doing the KDP,
jump the pump gear a tooth

took the AFC cover off
milled the cover and smoke screw > to run leaner
cleaned up the boost passage
and narrowed the power screw ring .075"
so I can turn it up 1 1/2 turns as needed

012_zpsey2uhhgg.jpg

At a glance all tamper caps are in place, pump in stock position

looks stock to me....lol

I always liked your style, build stuff out of what you have laying around.
No much of diesel fan, but I still appreciate them for the torque they produce.

That is gonna be badass. I love how you just appear to be throwing it together with junk layin around.

Thanks

I made this post, thought others, might find it interesting
a few years ago
I had to buy a 3 truck package deal ( all not running)
to get the one truck I wanted
this engine and trans have been just laying around in the shop
and want to get them out of the way

so that's when I decided to put the cummins in the satellite
I'm shocked that everything went together so easy
I built the roll cage in 1993, never thinking of setting a Cummins in there

Everything even fits , with the hood on...

I have the original steel / flat hood
I may put back on ( gray primer color)

Thanks Rusty,

trying to clean the shop
move one pile to another
Mostly Old Parts And Rust

Bill helped put the front clip on
Not heavy> just flimsy

Then I realized a mistake
the engine is set back 16", instead of 12" I had thought

I should say the transmission mount is set back 16" from the original location.
I used the trans mount to locate the eng/trans front to back

034_zpsaciuxha5.jpg

Bill also says I have a loose wire> putting a Cummins in the Satellite
as he points to the Block heater plug, hangin off the front of the grill LOL

016_zpsurajtzwt.jpg

I thing it looks grate!!!! with it set back like that it should help a lot on the hook factor!:burnout:

High-larious, that thing will be a riot to see and hear rockin' down the track,
too funny!! Just think, after you've blown away a chebby that just spit it's guts trying to
keep up, you can 'doze it over to the scrap heap where it belongs !! :D
Keep it comin'......:coffee2:

Reminds me of this car I seen a few years back....:glasses7:

Man, gonna take some getting use to,
seems strange hearing the Cummins vs BB stroker

really climbs rpm's quick with the pump gear, jumped one tooth advanced.

extended the roll cage to protect the fuel tank and pump
got the wiring finished
I'm to cheap to buy the needed wire to run the battery in the trunk
so to save wire weight,
used the factory truck battery cables (shortened)
ground right to the starter
It cranks/ starts fast.
cut the firewall to install a home made battery box
Hope it doesn't de-value the car>>>lol>>>joke

next is to re set the rear axle pinion angle
hook up the neutral safety switch
finish installing the trans shield.
re-install the doors and front clip
give it a bath
try to find a track South of me
that is still open
to get a base time run
before I pull the head this winter> port work, springs, 3800 gov. etc.

Would love to see a video of that first run!!!

I can see your well rehearsed on these early Cummins, and i don't need to say this BUT.
You need to get a pyro in there if you have jumped(advanced) the pump a tooth.

You don't need melted piston in your turbo!!!! :D

I believe in monitoring eng/trans
Could have went to a race today
But haven't got everything finished yet

I robbed the gauges from the car hauler.( using what, I have available)
plan to use the boost gauge , instead of tach,
to leave the line.

also has 2 water temps, oil pressure and trans temp, and fuel (electric pump set at 7psi, for now)
the shift light is also from the old set up
It is used as a loss of oil pressure light.

Very cool project. Been foolin around with my D250 I/C Turbo Cummins. Learning the ropes

time to turn the idle down more..........

Idle is fine
it's when, I want to bring the rpm's up ( as if setting at the line)
to build boost to launch the car

The trans is out of a airport Tug
no one could tell me the stall speed
so, used it anyway to find out.

It would be great for a DD, mileage converter.

Gonna check with my friend Brad,
he does pulling trucks,
see what he thinks about a different converter
