So here is a picture of my 72 dart before we discovered all the rust issues that had been covered up with bondo and then had under coating sprayed over it.
Our intension was to pull the motor and tranny, paint the engine bay body color and rebuild the tranny.
Then we found this.
Anyway after finding the rust there we took a good hard look at the 72 and found the same type of cover up had been done all over the car.
So listening to some good advice by some members here I decided to scrap the 72 and find a different car.
What I found was a 74 dart for $500 bucks
What we are going to do is turn it in to a 72 using the parts from the 72.
The vinyl top had some bad spots in it so the first thing we did was remove it.
Next took the bumper, grill, fenders and the beak off. Could't resist trying one of the 72 fender on it to make sure it fit.
The slant 6 R.I.P.
It was blown up and the dart will have a 318 in it anyway so out it came.
Now it was time to remove the tail panel to make way for the one from the 72. At first I thought it was kind of fun cutting out spot welds, I just didn't how many was there!
But it finally did come out. With some minor cursing and a few beers.
Here's my Granddaughter Kailyn out in the shop helping me. And my other shop helper Lilly doing what she does best.
Next I removed the tail panel out of the 72 and started to clean it up.
When we removed the tail panel from the 72 and cut out the spare tire well here is what we found.
So that's where my story ends for now, Next will be to fix the spare tire well on the 74 get the 72 tail panel on it then start body work.
Guess what I'll be doing this winter?
More to come.................
