U bolt help

So replacing the worn out stock leaf springs on my 72 scamp i bought a set of super stock springs at carlisle today….car still has the original 7 1/4 rear for now until i swap rears what size u bolts would i need and where should i look….also what shocks is everyone with super stock springs using? Thats in advance!

Get the OEM reproduction type that have the flattened top of the U.

45 FT Lbs not, 60 not, 100, not that feels right, but 45 or you WILL crush the housing tube.

You will need 8 3/4 shock plates

And the correct driveshaft or a new one or a shortened one.

Watch the joints there are 3 common Chrysler
Small, large and the other type. (Sorry I don't know the numbers off the top of my head)

As for shocks, use what you have then decide if you need so thing else.

Flattened U, and should have a waffle pattern on the inside

I just did the 8 1/4 in my Dakota. Spec was 110 lb-ft. It didn't crush my axle that I'm aware of

I've reused 7-1/4" shock plates for axles with 3" tubes by oblonging the holes. Kinda janky, but it can be done.

Summit's got some decent deals on u-bolts. I cut them to the proper length anyway, so length isn't a huge deal for me. As long as they have enough thread length to run the nut up as high as needed, you're good to go.

I just did the 8 1/4 in my Dakota. Spec was 110 lb-ft. It didn't crush my axle that I'm aware of

8 1/4 does not use stamped steel housing tubes.

I bought an 8 3/4 housing that looked perfect in the photos.

Got it home and the outer part of the tube had a round groove where the u bolt goes and that groove corresponded with a raised area on the inside of the tube.

Crushed tube = Bent tube

7 1/4 uses a smaller U Bolt than the 9 1/4 & 8 3/4.
Smaller in length, dia & size of bolt/nut

Just use your existing U bolts. Wire brush the threads and use plenty of PB Blaster while you're removing them so you don't strip the threads or break the bolts. It may take a lot of spray, loosen a ways, spray above the nut, retighten, spray below the nut, loosen some more action until you get them off. No need to invest in new ones until you swap rearends.

And look up the torque. Not as tight as you think they should be. 30-45 ft/lb comes to mind.

You said you already bought the springs, right? Measure the difference in spring pack thickness and see if you have long enough threads on your existing u-bolts to make up that difference.

I'm pretty sure the torque is 45 ft/lbs. I have a Dakota service manual right here. The 4wd does call for 110 ft/lbs, but 2wd is 65 ft/lbs. If you tighten to much, it will restrict spring movement

Leaf count. If you have 5 now 6 will only ad 1/8" or so

I agree with this, unless! Unless his stock 7 1/4 u-bolts aren't long enough to account for the extra leaves in super stock springs!
Speedway sells U-bolts of various lengths and housing diameters. IF your stockers aren't long enough.
Order by the length you need for the housing diameter you've got.
(I bought some lowering blocks, and longer u-bolts for my trailer axles from speedway).

Funny thing is the reason im changing the springs out now instead of down the road when i do the swap is because the previous owner installed lowering blocks in it and it just rides really terrible. The end plan is a 360 magnum/904/81/4 swap but id like to have alittle better ride quality for the time being. Ill check speedway out for sure if i need to! Thanks for the tip!!
