On a more upbeat note, the story of "us" finding "The Mad Jammer" back in those days (early 70's) in San Diego.
In those days, (and still is!!!) a ham radio 2 meter repeater on Mt Otay, W6WLV
HOME
On one of the weeks the repeater association did not have physical club meetings, they would have an informal "on the air" meeting. It came to pass that someone started jamming the thing. Mostly "dead carrier" and strong as all heck
Bear in mind that Gary, Mike, and I were young "free" and didn't pay much attention. This jamming went on for?? weeks. ?? You would hear the "senior members" talking about it occasionally, with "beam headings" supposedly to the jammer's "location" and about how "he's over this way" and "up here" and other nonsense
One afternoon "us" realized NOBODY was actually OUT looking for this jerk, instead they were in their armchairs, smoking their pipes, and rotating their beams, and spouting supposed headings
SO WE DECIDED to do something
Bear in mind this is a radio REPEATER. So your receiver, mobile, listens to the OUTPUT channel frequency, and your transmitter talks TO the repeater INPUT frequency. So to find the jammer, you need to LISTEN to this input frequency. This is in the days when my friend Gary had an old "trunk mount" vacuum tube unit, only 2 channel. So he had to BUY a crystal for the input freq, and "channel up" the receiver to hear both in and out freqs of the repeater
And we built a "loop" for DF (direction finding)
And I borrowed an inline crystal detector from work (The Navy)
So we had this "info" that the guy was down near Mt Otay somewhere because it was so damn strong. So we started out down on "Dictionary Hill" which is down near National City, very S end of the damn county.
And the jammer came on the air. The antenna "says" it's either N or S. Well "south" is Mexico, we figured he would not be down there. So we had north. And we drive and drive and drive until we get up to about Governor Drive This is 20miles from where we started!!!
There were 2 vehicles, and we get off Governor Drive to see where we stand. We pulled into a shopping center parking lot (which does not seem to be there nowadays) to confer.
NOW the heading is nearly E/W. We begin to wonder if we are picking up false indications because of all the broadcast stations up to the W because we are basically now just E of Mt Soledad
Then some guy stops by, says "you guys on a fox hunt?" So we feed him full of crap about how we are technically this and that
AND HE SAYS "My neigbor just down this street has a bunch of antennas on his roof and is ALWAYS interfering with my TV"
And off he goes. Two of the guys decide to walk down there and see what they can see
The report back that THERE ARE A GANGED ARRAY OF YAGIS ON THE ROOF ALL POINTED TOWARDS MT OTAY!!!
And about that time he goes off the air. So no more meter readings
My friend Gary (who worked for Scripps Institute, LaJolla, drove by the next day and said THE ANTENNAS WERE GONE!!!
So next time the meeting was on the air, we went out there, "ready." No jammer. And as we were leaving, Gary drives past this Ford SW. I look down and THE WHOLE BACK SEAT is full of equipment. The FCC had finally arrived---LATE
So even though we didn't "catch" him, nor bring him to justice, WE KNEW who he was and HE WAS OFF THE AIR
