What unobtainium parts are needs? starter list

-
What do folks need? What isn't available that can be reverse engineered and printed?

Keep in mind, these are for plastic parts, not metal as that tech is still quite expensive and not available for most folks. The current level of hobbyist printers is more than adequate to print high quality, high temperature, high strength products.

The engineering side can require lots of iterations and tweaking - if an Eng/Printer has the vehicle, it's an easier process; if not, member collaboration is more important to find members (hopefully close because shipping back/forth for test fits and tweaking can get costly) willing to help in the process. This generally also requires having a physical part in hand for precise measurements.

So - what holes are missing in the parts department?
Radio delete plates. Hard to find and why pay hundreds of dollars for a square piece of plastic. Specifically ones for Rallye dashes!

I could probably recreate these pretty easily if you could somehow get them to me.

Ive already done early A body front defrosters.
I might take you up on that, although the top area is so fragile that I don't know if anything other than the bottom would survive packing and shipping. Really need to run onto a set of better condition vents to model. Although if I had good vents, I wouldn't need to recreate them. LOL

As long as one pin and one bit of the top edge survives so i can measure it, it should still be doable.

I have access to a very expensive 3D scanner at my work. If anyone has parts they want to scan to save time with CAD then I am more than happy to volunteer my time to scan things during my lunch breaks. This is a taillight bezel I scanned for one of my projects that I am able to 3D print.

I haven't justified buying a "cheap" home scanner yet, I'm curious about what type of file you get out of that scanner?

My understanding is that you get a point cloud from the scan thats converted to a mesh.

So we have 2 scanners here at the office. One is a Keyence VL-570 and the other is a Creaform Metrascan Elite. The Keyence is good for smaller parts that are less than roughly 20 inches, whereas the Creaform could scan an entire vehicle. For scanning parts to print, the Keyence is what I use. To answer your question, I can export it from that software as either a point cloud or STL.

I'm trying to figure out how to use photo grammetry since I don't have access or money for a 3d scanner. But it seems pretty inaccurate for the part that I'm trying to replicate. I just can't get the smoothness to get good measurements to replicate and redesign it.

Do you have any example parts?
Not handy, I was just going by what I have seen on here and other places for people requesting these parts.
Would you like pictures or examples of the parts sent to you?

I have a HVAC control delete started, it's based on a 72 woodgrain dash insert, so I can't be sure it's 100% accurate

If someone has radio or HVAC block offs and want to take good photos plus dimensions it would be easier to reproduce

Is this what you’re looking for? Both the heat/A/C delete and radio delete are Mopar parts not original to car but I believe 72 correct. It will be significant time before I see the car again but if it’s wha you need I can get more info in time. I’m sure I’m not the only one with either part though.

Early A-body convertible parts no one's aware they are missing.....I'll have to dig my orginal not installed ones out and post.

This is what I have so far for a woodgrain car. Printing the whole part would be difficult, instead this is just a plug that fits in place after the controls are removed.

If someone was looking close, they would be able to tell for sure. The text on the factory part is raised about 1/32, this is designed to sit above that.

It needs a bit more tweaking on the drivers side to make it sit more flush.

Ah ok. Looks good either way! 99% of people wouldn’t notice. And the 1% that do likely would think that it would have come with an insert like the radio delete plate instead of being an entirely different piece.

I put together a google form, it will dump the answers to a spreadsheet, also linked below. Maybe we can work out a way to get good measurements, or get a good part sent to someone who's willing to do the work.

If anyone posting a part suggestion going forward can also use the form below (it should only take 2-3min) we can see about streamlining this process a bit.

Lower kick panel trim clips. I need them for a 65 barracuda...

@Chained_360 started the initial design for those clips, I've been trying to get them to restart it or sell me the file so that I can finish it up. They were going to do something a month or so ago, but it's been crickets ever since. So the initial design was started, it just needs a little bit of tweaking to finish it up.

Not a highly requested part probably but the plastic tail light covers on the dusters. The one in the trunk that covers the back side to protect the bulbs

What are the chances you could make key blanks? I haven't been able to find any blanks for my '65, and I only have one trunk key. Seems like some newer cars came with a plastic key for service or something.
