who here has built a sleeper

-
Dang old thread lol . Scott I want to see a pic of your dart as it sits now . I dont think i would call that thing a sleeper . If i remeber right its got a hood scoop and the big rear tires give you a clue lol ... If i seen you dart i would not mess with it lol . ( Not a sleeper ) Lmao But thats no zacly a bad thing lmao

I build a 1980 Plymouth Volarie a few years back.400 HP 383 I had 360 emblems on the fenders and 360 sticker on the aircleaner. Most never new the differance and thought it was a 360.I raced my Dad in his 69 Super Bee and I was 6-8 car lenghts ahead of him before I lifted off the gas pedal.

Always want to build a dead stock looking inside and out early abody granny moblie /6 with nos

An A body with a V8 and raspy idle isn't a sleeper in my opinion. A sleeper might be a four foor, or a wagon, or something that looks like it got spray bombed with primer and has big mufflers to keep it quiet, preferably a big nitrous plate too. Those cars are way to nice to be sleepers.

These kind of cars, are so much fun......

I wish I could find a photo.

Yellow 4-Door, with the Cab Light on the Roof.

We left the car banged up, to give it the New York City 'used' look.

Engine, a 440 {11.5-1 TRW Pistons} with Max-Wedge Heads, .510 Lift Solid Camshaft, Torker Intake and a Holley 850 Double-Pumper.

Hooker {under-chassis} Headers, to 'massive' Cadillac Mufflers.

Engine came out of a wrecked 1969 Charger.

'A-1' Torque-Flite A-727 w/3000 Stall Converter, and 3.91 Gears

Dog-Dish Hub Caps, with H-78 x 15" Blackwall Tires.

That is nice,69 440. My version,Y2K style: 67 notch Cuda. 360/727 used, from a Cordoba. Threw a 200/204 @ .050 Crower hydraulic ,at it.(Baja Beast). Hooker Comps, cheap turbo mufflers. Faded paint(the light yellow),some dents. Assembled for 1400 bucks, circa 1995. The car was sold to a 60's kinda guy, down on his luck . Set the chassis up,002/003 springs,Imperial rear shocks. He threw ,a T/Q at it.Ran 13.99 first pass. Out came the D/C book,LOTS of tuning. Eventually ,ran a 13.61 @ 103. Parts massaged right.. The smooth idling cam, sucked people in . After 1400 ft,people zoomed past him. (Usually, with frustration)....

Being as our Dart is a 4 door and I always wanted a 340......maybe someday.

:happy1:

I´m going to put this 318 into my 4 door Valiant. It should make 300+ HP.
The Valiant was driven as taxi back in 1968. My plan is to make it look as it was back then on outside.

Now I need the money to buy that 8 3/4 with sbp!

Specs:
16 inch vacuum at idle, 9,6 comp, MSD distributor, Edelbrock RPM Gap intake, Edelbrock 600CFM carburator.

As to the 340 exhaust manifolds, I read somewhere some time ago that the manifolds from the mid 90s 360 trucks were as good as the early 340s. There are lots of them now in the junkyards at a lot less cost than the 340s. I have a set I am saving for one of my own projects and can furnish casting numbers if you want them. Jerry

Magnum drivers side manifold wont clear steering box. The 340 drivers side with 2&1/4 outlet is pretty common. Just get magnum V8 ,passenger side, get custom exhaust made to fit.

I have had a few sleepers. Back in high school I had a 1970 440 Plymouth Fury 1 (ex-trooper). This thing would run. My buddy had a 1967 396 chevelle ss with a 396. We hooked these 2 up, on the first run, he beat me by a link. I just blew the tires off of it! next run, we went from a rolling start. I beat him by 2-cars! This car also had a top end speed that could hold its own.
My favorite sleeper was my 1987 5TH Avenue. I took a 1985 Trooper Gran Fury & parted it out. I used all the suspension, brakes, rear end, & 125 MPH certified speedo. I built a E58 360 spec. engine, complete with 8.5 comp., stock 340 cam, small valve J-heads, port-matched Edel. Performer intake, 340 T-Quad carb, 1 5/8 headers, no cats, 2 1/4 exhaust w/Dyno-max turbos, 999 t-flite with a 2.74 low gear, & a 8 1/4 rear end with a Suregrip & 2.94 ratio. I kept every option the car came with, gotta be comfy. This thing weighed 4100 lbs. It would run 14.80's all day long. It had a great top end due to the 2.94 gear & fuel milage wasn't to bad, 17 mpg. The only give away was the tach on the dash. One of the best stop light challenges that I had, involved a 1971 chevelle, complete with teenager & hood scoop. I smoked this kid. He was supposed to be the fastest car in school. It wasn't long before the kids started saying , stay away from that old guy driving the old brown Chrysler.

Years ago at the mopars at englishtown show prob around 1989 there was a guy at the show with an early 80s diplomat wagon complete with woodgrain, and goodyear eagle GT+4 white wall tires on it. Car had a 440 six pack with a 4 speed bench seat setup. And 8.75 rear in it. He had little 440 six pack emblems under the diplomat emblems on the front fenders. Said the young kids he would street race had no clue what that meant anyway. 5.0 stangs, and iroc z camaros were easy to dispose of he said. This thing still had a/c and cruise control hooked up too. Lol.

now this isnt a mopar but....... i will be damned if this isnt about the most bad *** sleeper i ever seen.

Granny sleeper surprised a few folks not long ago, just a three on the tree shifting and clutching to get to the finish line first, I eliminated a 68 Dart GT and 2 shevy suburban's this day with my little 170/6 Valiant sedan with a quit stock single muffler quit and smooth using fluid dynamics :D
Is she a sleeper ? maybe not, but when I mat it at 60 to make a pass I am sure they think there is a V8 in her on the hwy :D

How bout a 67 4dr valiant with a 2.4 turbo SRT-4 motor and a Supra R154 5 speed? The 2.4 weighs just a little over 1/2 what a slant weighs and you could easy get 350hp and still get 30+ highway!! :burnout: throw a quiet exhaust on it n no one would be the wiser :glasses7:

No I haven't done this but yes the idea excites me and the 67 is in a local yard... Might just have to try it someday

seems like a lot of different people in this thread have different definitions of what a sleeper is.

I always thought that a sleeper was a car that had an outward appearance of being a mild everyday car, but under the hood tells a different story

here is what I have been defining as a sleeper.

its a 72 dart with an outward appearance of being a totally original car with a bench seat, just how grandma would have ordered it in 72.

but under the hood I have a 440/ 4 speed 3.55 sure grip

when I drove this car as a daily driver ....no one ever really challenged me because it don't look like much and the boring color don't help...it looks like a slanty car ...318 at best, which is actually what it was originally......when this car took off like a rocket people were often surprised

Guilty of the sleeper...when it wasn't running

Here's what it looked like

And what it sounded like (video is newer, and was the last time my '74 ever moved under its own power)...instant giveaway that something sinister was under the hood.

Here's the starting point I owned for the one I was gonna do. I just lost steam after having to move it so many times.

I wanna get another Dart and make it look just like it and shove a turbocharged 360 Mag engine under the hood and run a muffler. To me, a sleeper is something like it would never even have the potential to go fast

70 dart custom- 360 ci

well looks like a sleeper, til the engine fires up

We put the stroker in last week 449 ci and have NO traction/ tire shake, made a pass-ran to lean- took it home
So, rather than break the rear end, we parked it for the season, will be tubbing it this winter, for 10x15 rallys and 275 et pro tires

so we drug the old "shine runner" (wanna be Road runner) lol out for a pass, took off in second gear/ manual valve body to keep from blowing the tires off> cold track 50*
first time on E-85
both run on E-85, we have learned that we don't have enough flow, but have enough pressure, so the fuel lines will be increased also from an-6 to a an-10
both cars went lean nearing the 600ft

Dang! Rani and draginmopars has some sleepers going on here =D>

Exactly. Y'all have nice cars, and they may be faster than they look, but no two door muscle car can be a sleeper.

If you have a minivan that runs 10's,that is a sleeper.
