That's a very cool idea. I was reading that it's a Scottish tradition when the mortgage is paid off. A red door signifies other positive things too...for colonial travelers, a home with a red door was a place where they were welcome to stop for the night. Churches often have red doors, and barns are red to protect livestock from evil spirits. In Feng Shui, red is said to be the best color to paint your front door for luck and good energy.
