here you go guys .. Watch how this little commando loves to rev to 7500 rpms... .
awesome !
I had lots 340 darts that never revved like a 273 commando does..

Go up on youtube and read what the engine specs were ...You will be surprised what was done to the engine.. practically nothing .

Yes............ 7400 rpm. and still climbing.

they said in the video........... it would have climbed higher .. but there was no reason to go any further ........ so pulled out at 7400.

D-A-M...and I'm not talking about beavers. That is one crazy 273!

Lots of head work, proper clearances and a big cam.

That is sweet. It pulled pretty fast too. In the description it mentions that it is a FIA motor which is a NHRA Super Stock motor with 450 BHP at 7400. That is one trick piece, would take a lot to make your garden variety 273 to make that. Back in the day my 273 ran 14.33 at 101 in my 68 Dart. It had 8 to 1 compression and I wish I had been smart enough to build a better 273, I think I could have had a 12 second 273 which would have been cool. Even with no compression mine revved to 7000 but had no low end torque. Thanks for sharing

hydro would not rev that hard I believe. IT would be like a bike motor, all rev, no torque? They are a tight motor, I remember my S when it had the original motor, the factory tach pegged at 6 and I could bounce that needle with no effort in N and 1st.

I've heard and read lots of 12 second stories about the 273. The one thing they all have in common is headers. You have to let the air out of it. I suspect the engineers used the exhaust manifolds as a rev limiter of sorts. If the engines were supposed to rev past 6K the tach would have registered above 6K.

Well Men ..... I got the 273 all back together after installing a ld4b intake and a holley 650 dp jetted to stock specs... The 273 seemed to be faster before in stock mode .. It just did not rev like like did before . in stock mode it reved real fast ...... I think it is way too much carb with that holley.
what do you guys think ..
Oh yeah..... runs like a kitten .. real smooth and no valve train ticking .

SORRY DOUBLE POSTED

Well men .... . I got the 273 fired up tonight with the new ld4b intake and a 650 dp holley.. Engine is real quite no valve train noise after intalling the two new pushrods and adjusting all the rockers.

Took it out for a spin and was NOT impressed.. I set the holley 650 dp to stock specs jet 67 frt. and 74 rearr. just seem to be tooooo much carb for the 273 . my engine is all stock except for the ld4b I just installed.

did not rev real fast like it did in stock form.

I'm in the process of freshening up the 273 hipo in my 65 Barracuda. I don't know the history of the motor, but the bottom end looks really good. I can't wait to fire it up.

I love those 65 barracudas .. that one is my favorite.
I have dougs headers coming next week and that is all i'm doing to the 273 .
going to try a smaller carb or put the original back on and jet her up.
I love that carter afb !
good luck with your project !

LOL I have rebuilt the Carter AFB that came on the motor when I got the car. The afb is actually from a 66 big block. No idea on cfm, but I am guessing around 650 and seemed to be jetted close, so I am running it. I have a set of fresh 318 open heads, that I am porting (cleaning up the bowls and runners). After cc'ing the heads and running a .028" gasket it puts me right at 9:1, so pump gas won't be an issue. I am just going to throw on an old street dominator intake and call it good. Oh yeah I'm going to run 340 manifolds also.

Now does this sound like a 273 dartcharger engine to you? Well it is... all stock internals. I just added a ld4b intake , dougs headers , 2.5" xpipe , 2.5" ultraflo muffers , 2.25" tails and swinger chrome tips .. stock carter 500 carb , electronic dist pertronix kit , and cold plugs .. What a beast ! that tweeking really woke this little 273 up. unbelievable . the video is half throttle rresponses ... revving to around 6 grand.. this engine loves 7000 rpms and up Bangin the gears ..
