I've seen 273 Commando Slinced Air Cleaners with a 2" stem protruding out from the side leading to the PCV and some without. What years did it differeniate or is it CA built cars got the side stem for the PCV for emission reasons? My '66 Barra. F/S came with the side stem and is a CA built car.

The tube on the breather didn't go to PVC valve. It went to a breather cap on the left valve cover that also has a tube. Part of Cali' emissions package.

The tube is for CAP (Clean Air Package) used on vehicles in California. Does anyone know whether all Darts produced in LA had the CAP system. As a clarification: The open bottomed air cleaners are considered "unsilenced". Air cleaners with a snorkel are "silenced". tmm

Thanks fellas, I thought that was the difference.

I have one of each. The CAP cars also had a different intake.

Mike! What I know of all Darts had it too. At least the Charger engine in 65!

I just was curious if all cars produced in LA had CAP whether they were sold in California or not. What all states were the California produced cars sold in?

Cars with designations other than California wouldn't have to have that emissions package. If law was written so it dictated every vehicle built in California meet their local emissions standards those plants couldn't build for export to anywhere.

CAP AFB 4bbl cars slso had 3 step metering rods under 'dimpled' covers.

All Barracudas were built in Michigan -- cars destined to be sold in California had the CAP package, the others did not. I imagine the Darts built in California were the same way. My Barracuda was sold in Oregon to a Washington customer, for which I'm grateful, as I can avoid dealing with the rare CAP parts.

Just curious. My car was sold in Washington or Oregon and had a CAP intake on it but a standard AFB carb. According to the Vin it was built in Hamtramck. I believe it was sold to a young man in the service. I wonder if those cars came from a central depot in the Midwest.

My Dart Charger was built in Dec. of 1964 and has no "cap". The '65 Dart GT 273 HiPo I had that was bought at Chuck Hutton Dodge in Columbus, Georgia did not have it either.

I must point out that Barracudas were also assembled in the Los Angles plant. I have a 66 with VIN: BP29D65xxxxxxx. The "5" indicates built in Los Angles,

Sorry, what I meant was, all 67-69 Barracudas were built in Hamtramck, Michigan. We weren't talking about 64-66.

My 66 Valiant Signet 273 Commando has the CAP package and was built in LA.

My 65 doesnt have CAP, and doesn't have the port.

Also, All 65 AFBs had the three step rods CAP or not.

I would like to see a factory chrome 273 4BBL air cleaner with nipple to breather. I have never seen a chrome one like that. plenty of black ones tho.

Here's one. All the HP engines had chrome air cleaners. The 2 barrel engines had the black air cleaners with a snorkel. The black unsilenced cleaners were used on slant 6's and big blocks.
