Stop in for a cup of coffee

I saw a downward trending line. It could have represented my financial status over time, my odds of getting laid or even the odds of getting ALL my cars running!
I'd mark that with big disagree X, but that almost always comes across so negative. Besides, if the first helps the other too happen, it will be worth it. :)

And you understand that current is flow.
Like water floooooowwwwwwing in a pipe.
:)
Try drawing arrows representing flow and it shows why the ammeter does't show current with engine off, lights on.

See?
The current doesn't flow through the ammeter getting to the headlights because the gage is in the alternator output line; and alternator output is zero.

Everything will measure 12 Volts give or take, so a voltmeter isn't very helpful in solving this one. Its either eyeballs and tear everything apart, or eyeballs and an ammeter.

And high dollar injectors and pumps and expensive-as-all-hell parts and some kind of voodoo magic that sometimes makes them work and sometimes not... Simple!
meh, I learned it pretty easily. and without formal training.

Try that with ammeter in the alternator output, engine off, headlights on.

i get the flow concept pretty well.

I think it just boils down to me needing to actually put my hands on the harnesses and route them accordingly and just see what happens.

The drawings are much easier to follow when resketched into functional diagrams like above.

The wiring diagrams in the manuals are schematics to show where everything goes. Even colorized they are hard to use as functional diagrams. That's why I redraw the circuits I'm working on. That's true whether its the main feeds like here, or tailgate harness on my wagon.

This guys situation was and is tricky to figure because we had to first recognize the ammeter was in the wrong location.

If we wanted an ammeter in the alternator output, it would be calibrated 0 to 80 amps in just one direction. Be kindof cool actually.

Hey @Ben Drinkin , I ran into the Iowa Marketing Manager for Cedar Ridge Distillery today and got to sample a couple new choices that are only available at the distillery. Note "Batch 1" on the Maple.

lots to read.
battery was hot because it was discharged..
without being hands on that wiring harness and a diagram in hand,im lost.once I get to reassembling the barracuda,i will be more clued in.too much late model wiring in my head at this point.I was for many years the go to wiring guy around here, but lately its been slipping away.
for one, back and neck don't want me under a dash anymore
and my eyes aren't what they used to be.
better glasses and good light are two requirements.

There is Google in third world countries... I use it there often.......Just Sayin....
heh. I'm sure there is!
Fortunately there's still places right here in the USA with no cell. Where I worked in N Jersey was like that until we finally got a satelite system in place.

Yup. And don't know if he's going to get himself a charger or keep rolling the dice. You've told 'im, I've told him, Mike's told him and I told him again last night to do what you said.
If your curuious TJ I put a diagram in last post there of what I think the wiring guy did.
Wouldn't surprise me if there's more issues. I think there's something pulling on the battery even when its off but not going to say anything since its just a guess and this is already over his head.

I get it. Some people have a hard time with wiring. Thats a fact.
Does not mean im an electronic genius,as wiring is just what connects electronics.

As far as wiring goes, anyone can make a bulb light up.
Its how far beyond one light bulb are they willing to go?

Oh shoot I thought was Chris when I first hit reply. lol. The guy with the battery getting hot doesn't seems to understand (based on his actions). Thats why its just one step at a time there, and sometimes a few back for things that were missed.
You're much further along in understanding the electricity and wiring.
I agree, wiring is just what connects the stuff.

And I'm not that great in electronics. Once we're into that I think a bunch of you guys are ahead of me. Hoppy and Kieth for sure, and probably others.
I've looked at the internal circuit diagrams for the GM SI regulators and I still dont fully follow the operation.

When I see a thread progress in a negative direction I get afraid, very afraid. LOL
