What to expect out of mild build 360

yeah, most wouldn't put a 750 Double pumper on a stock 360 with stock converter and 2.76's..... I get told all the time how I do it wrong, ya know, traction bars on a Mopar? And that Carb?

How is it that you feel your car defies all the other schools of logic?...
 
there is only one logic with me.... give the car what it wants. Once all people were taught the earth was flat..... if everyone is saying it, it must be true? All computer calculators and magazines think a 600 cfm is the best choice for my car. I started with a 600, and I believe i'm on my 4th carb and it has gone the quickest with the 750 dp. Now how many, even on this sight would have tried? Not very many. And they'd still have a 14 second car....

I agree. Have never put a bigger carb on a smallblock and not had it pick up.
My mid 11 sec 318 was 11 hundreds slower with a good 750 than a good 950
That was pump gas and iron heads. Loved that 950. In fact that carb is on my 360 now, which also likes it better than it did a 750
 
Similar build with hp manifolds instead of headers. After the Comp XE 268 swap it was a bit of a dog with 3.23's. Turns out it had way less CR than the builder remembered. Put a set of 3.73's and a Coan 2500 converter in. Much better but it still needed more compression.
 
There is no denying 318wr can tune a car.
He has been doing more with less than anybody I know. So any remarks to discredit him are not funny to me. If you ask him for help on yours, he is more than happy to help you as you know.
He has done amazing things with his Dusters. He will be kicking a 4 in strokers butt with a stock 360 short block ET wise by the end of summer.
Why? Because he can tune an tweak like few others and he knows his cars and how they react.
If your modified 340 or 360 or 408 can't break 13.00 either it's the car, the engine, the driver or a combo of the 3.
I plan to outrun him by the end of summer with a stock stroke. lol

I dont think anybody is trying to discredit him. I( speaking for myself)just found it hard to believe. I think most would. Not knowing him and his skills, its unusual for a combo to run like that.

340 stockers have been in the 10.40’s, so mid 13’s dont seem so strange for a 360 smogger when you think about it. But it certainly isnt the norm, or i would have never said anything, and i have seen a car or 3 go down the track... lol

That being the case j par, i still need 35 spline 28in axles, a 35 spline spool and 4.88 dana 60 gears. If you have any of these parts, I can pay shipping.

Back in the 70s we saw many 340 abodys that ran mid 13s with mild modifcations.

The OP I believe has high 12 capabilitys.

Smogger motor with pistons way in the hole, stock smog heads, highway gears, stock cam and convertor, etc, aren't what would normally be considered “ mild modifications”.
Usually it would be an aluminum intake, gears, camshaft with some lift and duration and maybe a “ streeter” type 10 inch convertor. Least that is my experience. What were called bolt on’s in my world
I had a bone stock 70 Duster not all that long ago. 54000 miles, factory 340 bench seat car. Factory heads had never been off of it.... ultimately it became a sleeper uncut/ untubbed full interior 9 sec car a few years later
My first effort to make it faster was 3310 carb, dual plane intake, hughes 230/238 hydraulic cam, 3k Coan convertor and 4.10 gears. Weighed about 3420 with me( i am 6’5 300+)
I remember well the night it broke into the 12’s with the above mods. Stock 340 shortblock that had never been apart and factory rocker gear still. Shifted it off the column had rev man valve body. Remember how happy i was. Nearly 1.5 sec gain over bone stock like it was when i got it

I was there... too. I thought I had a decent build, as you described. Until a guy with much less ran a second faster than me. I wasn't upset, I only wanted to learn the "why's". I don't count myself as a super tuner or anything of the sort. But my personal expectations for my cars and what I demand from them is what I learned from the past. I don't put my cars on pedestals, and I fully believe anyone can get the same results because I'm not special... LOL, and is why I said I thought the op would hit low 13's, or high 12's. I would except nothing less than a 12 second pass with his combo myself.

100% agree! A lot of "12 second" street cars go down to make a 14 second pass... LOL. And it isn't always traction, sometimes they have a 12 second car because somebody "told" them it should be 12's... LOL

Sorry the only thing that I got even close on that list is 410 Dana gears...
 
3.23 gears and stock convertor it isnt going to run anywhere close to real low 13’s. Maybe real high 13’s if i had to guess.
Back in 1972 i had a 69 340 swinger. Headers and 3.55 gears. Ran 14.23
This should run better than that no doubt. I will say 13.70’s- 13.80’s
This all assumes he has a stock convertor


Sorry for the late reply, Yep I've got a stock 318 converter with the B&M 10239 flexplate (after the balancing weights I welded on last year blew off and put a hole in the transmission case)

Yeah the tires on the car are gonna change at some point, just some cheapys to replace the who knows how old tires that were on the car when I bought it. And yeah the only thing I'm expecting when I get to the track is for the car to break lol, it seems like that's the only thing its doing this year, although I don't mind since I'm learning a shitload about fixing it :p
 
My turn to guess! Based on lots of 318-340 and 360 fun, I speculate it'll run 14.50s at 94 to 96 mph right of the bat. But with experience it'll drop for sure.

I installed flat top pistons to raise my compression on a 360 /after getting everything together and installed they were .060 farther down the hole then stock dished ones ,they were 0.120 down. they were adv, to raise compression but they lied/so flat top pistons doesn't mean anything . but with the 268 cam installed I had 140 psi compression and with open chamber heads .this was in a 3/4 ton pick up with 3.55 gears /stock trans and converter/ tires were 9.50 #16'' and it had no problem moving out or pulling a heavy load but I could get it to ping ,I would check your tune up and don't go over 35 deg on timing. also your spark plugs are too hot IMO 12 champion heat range would be better/ 14 are for 318/273
