An acquaintance of mine had a 471 in a nine second street 71 demon, made a couple of Mopar magazine covers.
Also built a 501 (or was it 502?) Small block. That one was a little too far over the top, didn't last long.
He's now on his 2nd or 3rd demon challenger, not counting a couple hellcats.....

Not a Chevy? I remember one Chevy SB being built to that size. I don’t ever remember hearing of a SBM being built that big.

Ron's was a Mopar. At the time he was a member of moparts.com, a search there may turn up a build thread.

OK, for clarification….. the 500 CID small block was a MoPar? Thanks fellas. If so, I must be confusing posts from way back. I remember the 500 inch small block but thought it was a Chevy engine. Something about use of a torque plate welded onto the decks I don’t remember any more. TIA

I wouldn't doubt that it's pretty stout down low, that 4.25" crank is going to help. His cam's duration is bigger than mine, 263/271 @.050, 108, .711/.719" and I'm running 11.2-1 compression. My 434 is a monster everywhere.

I'd be willing to bet he could run almost, or maybe 1 more point of compression and be okay on pump gas.

I have a similar duration and a bit less lift cam that Bullet ground for me and my plan was to change that, get the compression up to 11:5 and go EFI but didn’t have the spare coin at the time. Now that it’s in the car and running I’ll do that stuff next year.
To Dons point about the converter, he’s right. But I threw in a 10” TA that I had on the shelf after conferring with them. The car needs an 5000 8” and a 4.10 gear to be optimal but both of those areas are a big compromise for street drivability.

That just seems Brutal. Does it still twist like a small block?

he stopped by for a coffee and a beer....kidding, since i´m pretty interested in everything SBM i´m soaking up a lot of information from the internet. and since i do have a 2dr Valiant, too, it was much more interesting to me. this build impressed me!

It sounds like a great build, but I'm curious about something. I wonder if anyone has ever done dyno comparisons between a 440 small block and an RB 440 similarly built. I'd like to see how their power and torque curves differ.
 
I've got some 440 smallblock pistons floating around here somewhere..Built one a while ago for a customer.
 
It’s been a possible combo for a long time needing a big bore. 4.17 stroke X 4.100 bore is an example, (4.220+ bore size able race block needed here ->) 4.2 bore X 4.0 stroke is a 443. 4.07 X 4.25 stroke crank no longer available IIRC = 442 cubes.

IF you have the big bore small block, the one that is able to be bored to 4.2, then use the 4.25 stroke crank, you’ll end up with an incredible 471 cubic inches.

The current problem to achieving this (IIRC) is now the crank as the block can be a Ritter block for the bore size. Then to properly feed this size engine, you have a cylinder head problem. It only gets so good.

Oh I am quite sure this can be done but like I said I have never heard of a SB 440 until now....

Yeaaaaa, I got that. I was just showing a few ways it can be done. Nothing more, nothing less. I thought it would be of interest. I hope it was! It makes me day dream a little. :D
 
I don't see how it could with a 4 1/4" stroke.

I think it's an old wives' tale that long stroke engines can't turn up. There are plenty of 4.5" and longer stroke engines at the drag strip that turn a lot of rpm's.

The fasted pass my 434 ever made was 6.25 at a tick over 110, when I looked at the log I turned it over 7800 on the 1-2 shift, I almost fainted. After examining logs from later runs where I hit the shift points the tach was replaced.
 
I’m pretty sure the build Brett Miller did with some cnc ported Victor heads and a custom billet TR was a 440” small block.
I seem to recall it making about 1000hp.

1014 hp SB

They were starting the dyno pulls at about 7k.
