Going on vacation next week waiting on everything to go wrong
Did the trans guy tell you exactly what all was worn out last time?I couldn’t stop worrying about it, and wondering WTF is going on with this damn transmission. Knowing it would keep me from getting a good night of sleep, I took off from work early and said screw it the trans is coming out tonight and going to the trans shop tomorrow. So once again the bed of the truck is full of parts, my garage floor and driveway look like a murder scene from a horror movie, and the damn trans is out. Moving on.

Yea read back a few pages Bob. The clutch was destroyed. No reverse either time.Did the trans guy tell you exactly what all was worn out last time?
Did it still have reverse last time? Did it still have reverse this time?
So are you thinking the bolts are bottoming out and when tightening them, they are flexing the converter inward? The one pic doesnt look bottomed out but 1/2" would be too long. Or if pulling ahead 3/4" is it coming out of the pump to not engage well? I am not a transmission guy either, just thinking out loud. Atta boy on getting it back out already, I'd have done the same.Upon closer inspection this entire debacle could possibly be my own damn fault. Or maybe the fault of the guy building the converters, we’ll see. Looking at the converter, the pads for bolting to the flexplate are very shallow. Like 3/16”. The bolts I’m using are 1/2”. The thickness of the flexplate is like 1/16”. All of the bolts punched through the converter and hit the clutch. I think the pads are wrong. When bolting it up in the truck, the converter has to pull forward like 3/4” . The 904 converter I have here has HUGE pads compared to this one. If anyone knows the dimensions of the bolt pads on a 46re converter please chime in. I’ll know more tomorrow hopefully. View attachment 1716422061View attachment 1716422060

The converter leaked when I unbolted the flexplate bolts. It was an “ah ha” as well as a “WTF” moment. The 2nd picture above is looking into the bolt hole. You can see the converter clutch inside. The bolts punched through for sure. All 4 of em.So are you thinking the bolts are bottoming out and when tightening them, they are flexing the converter inward? Ah, got it! and see it now. Damn Oops. The converter leaked when I unbolted the flexplate bolts. It was an “ah ha” as well as a “WTF” moment. The 2nd picture above is looking into the bolt hole. You can see the converter clutch inside. The bolts punched through for sure. All 4 of em.
The last thing that engages when installing the converter is the pump lugs, I think. Maybe if the pads are too thin the converter pulled out too much and disengaged the pump lugs. That would explain the loss of forward and reverse at the same time, if the filter was not just plugged with debris. Hard to say without measuring. Ask your converter guy how much "pull out" there should be for connecting to the flex plate. There is a spec But I do not know it. I have another 46RH still bolted to an engine but cannot access it for a while to check that.Upon closer inspection this entire debacle could possibly be my own damn fault. Excellent information thank you. I did ask my trans builder how much pull out there should be when bolting the converter to the flexplate and he said it should be around 1/8”. I swear this one moved 3/4” or maybe a little less. The bolts wouldn’t grab the pads and pull it forward. I had to move it by hand. I’m feeling like the short pads are the cause of this whole thing. And me using 1/2” (under the washer) bolts just made everything worse. The last thing that engages when installing the converter is the pump lugs, I think. Maybe if the pads are too thin the converter pulled out too much and disengaged the pump lugs. I just checked a 46RH I have here. The bolts are about .420" long from under the head. The pads on the converter are about .280" thick as measured from the body of the converter. The depth of the holes is actually about .410" when I plunge the caliper into the hole until bottoms out.
I will try to double check these numbers later after I move stuff around for better access because the thickness and depth don't seam to play well together.
Only bad news from the weekend was at one point I kicked the compressor in my garage and broke my toe, because flip flops. So now I have a pirate limp.
huzzah! this is fantastic news!Ok time for a good news update right? Tired of all the downtrodden crap news? Yea me too. Saturday we hit the ground running early, had plans later in the day to go watch some speedway racing so we had to have the trans in and running long before that. I need to back up a bit, I sent the converter back to my trans guy Tuesday and explained what I felt like the situation was. Short pads, long bolts, wrong cover, short snout, pulling out of the pump, etc. and he sent the converter to be rebuilt with more specific instructions and apparently more information on what my total combo is. Got everything back on Thursday and I did some backyard engineering to measure how far the converter would pull out to bolt up to the flexplate. My trans guy wanted 1/8”. I was slightly more than that still so I welded .060 shims on the pads of the converter and bolted everything together with new (perfect length) bolts. Then yanked the pan and gasket, replaced the filter, cleaned everything and slapped it all back together. Good news is neither the trans shop or the converter guy charged me for any of this, even gave me new fluid, filter, and gasket. Good to see that level of customer service and I think we got it figured out. Troy and I slammed it all in place and had it running about 1:00. We hopped in and put about 5 miles on it just to verify everything works the way it should. I now have all 4 forward gears with lock up and reverse. Win win win finally. We’ll see how long this lasts. I plan to put a bunch more miles on it in the near future driving it locally to and from work, just to develop some trust in it, then drive it to the duct tape drags in October and beat on it a little.
don't forget about my "Class Leading" Two Part Garumb-tee™and I yanked the distributor for a rebuild because I knew this one was sloppy and I bought a good used unit from @junkyardhero at spring fling to use.
turbo mike! right in front of my OSHA!?? c'mon man!!at one point I kicked the compressor in my garage and broke my toe, because flip flops. So now I have a pirate limp.
lol I was rockin flops long before he was. He got that shiz from me.Who do you think you are, D/F???
It’s a good piece. But the vacuum can was garbage so you owe me one. What kinda raccoon infested operation are you runnin over there?if it breaks in two you get to keep both pieces!

I wear work boots 10 hours a day. So when I’m not in those it’s either Simpson race shoes or the flops.Brah, you can no wear da rubba slippas in the garage!
I shoulda sent the slant to you. It was actually a decent one. I looked for a LONG time for an original paint unmolested shorty D100 with minimal rust. This one clicked all the boxes.Even though you didn't leave the slant in it, I like it. It's comin along real nice. I'm jealous though, because the 72-72 short bed is what I've always wanted. Really TOUGH to find in good shape.
I sure wouldda welcomed it.I shoulda sent the slant to you. It was actually a decent one. I looked for a LONG time for an original paint unmolested shorty D100 with minimal rust. This one clicked all the boxes.
I gave it to a local kid that’s fixing up his dad’s valiant. So it went to a good home.I sure wouldda welcomed it.
That's even better. I have a few 225s now anyway. All I used to have were 170s. Now through a lot of generosity, I have some 225s, too.I gave it to a local kid that’s fixing up his dad’s valiant. So it went to a good home.
That is the plan sir.Awesome it's fixed. Congrats, now go enjoy it
