this spindle has two R's stamped into the face.....but the caliper brackets mount holes would be on the front if mounted on the right / passenger side.

Please school me. Is this a R or L spindle?

Right side looking from the front of the vehicle ?

no idea who stamped the R's on. I am thinking someone who does not use the norm automotive R/passenger and L /driver side designation?

could it be off an F body? that would be the right side for the F body. they had the caliper mounted in front of the spindle.

From the factory, the '73+ calipers mount towards the front- most people like to flip the spindles to the opposite side to make them rear mount when retrofitting them on earlier vehicles due to potential sway bar interference. This requires a longer brake hose, usually sourced from early Camaro or Aspen/Volare.

The disc swap I made from a '74 Dart to my '69 Barracuda put the calipers to the front.

So far as I know factory calipers mounted to FRONT. Guys (and me) swap them left to right so the calipers are at the rear to avoid problems with anti-sway bar interference. On some cars this screws up the brake hose routing. I used Volare hoses, later on someone discoverd ?? Camaro hoses fit the reversed setup

wow....so that R could be a factory marking ....the spindle for the passenger side. Who da thunk it?

You never say never when it comes to the things Ma Mopar did.

Yes, A-body (73-76) mounted the calipers to the front, BUT when the Aspen/Volare came out the calipers were rear mounted. The spindles are slightly taller and the caliper pistons are different size, but they look nearly identical. The bottom line is that the caliper doesn't care whether it is front mounted or rear, only that the bleeder is up.

So there isn’t a braking benefit to the caliper being mounted in the front or the rear? I’ve been told that rear mounting makes the braking more effective, whatever that means. Never bought it, but I could be wrong.

I've heard that too. I've run them both ways, and in my situation I honestly can't tell any difference. I stab the pedal, it stops.
