Is my 340 Overcarbed? Avg 5-6 MPG

Holleys can be such a pain to tune--yeah they do make more HP then any single Carter carb. If your not looking for best HP, I would think about a 600 Carter Competition carb. The metering rods are easier to change to tune it and it will likely idle better to boot. Flame away, lol, I ran holleys...

    Carter, Edelbrock, or Holley?

There was very good reasons TWO carters were used back in the 50's and 60's.

Fuel tank rubber hose lines, how long do they last

My car was at the exhaust shop yesterday, hoses on the outside look fine. Yeah its a 1979 model but me and the dual carbs think its mid 60's. I think they be fine but yeah would stink being 200 miles from home and no fuel to the pump.

Fuel tank rubber hose lines, how long do they last

Those rubber hoses right near the gas tank, they have no pressure, just sight vacuum a few inches drawing the fuel to the steel gas lines. Mine look OK on outside, are 33 years old and planing on a 500 mile road trip soon. Should I change those before the trip ? I don't know if I'm getting...

    Can I convert from 750 to 950?

You can use the 750 main body but you need to modify the base plate where the idle feed holes are. Google it. Only difference between the two carbs is the larger base plate throttle plates. A holley 850 flows way more than a holley 950. If your going to buy everything get a 850, IMO

    carter-competition float level

Thanks for your advice, maybe I should just leave them now alone. My driving style can be high G's at times/ Michigan has this dumb thing were for many left turns you need to drive PASS the road you want to turn on and make a U turn an 1/8 of a mile pass the street you wanna go on. Waste of...

    carter-competition float level

I got two nice mid 1990's Carters on my little 340. Its doing really good expect fuel mileage. The carbs were nos 2 summers ago, I just adjusted the floats last week, looking at the floats they are just angle up a little from being flat level with the body holding the top upside down. The floats...

Ethanol blended gas (good or bad?)

I use the 110 leaded stuff, lol. But I have no lawn mower. I hire a lawn crew, pushing a lawn mower back and forth and breathing all those gas fumes week after week has to be harmful to your health, imo Besides they get it done in 15 mins, lol

Ethanol blended gas (good or bad?)

Yeah well hang on cause last I heard was the EPA is getting ready to increase the amounts of ethanol to over 10%. Some are saying it could go to 15% maybe even 20%. Big debate in if it should be marked or not so older cars will not use it. Then again the epa-our government only cares about what...

Ethanol blended gas (good or bad?)

Yeah the cans used to say add one quart of marvil mystery oil to each 20 gallons of fuel. Now they talk in oz, like 1 oz to each gallon of fuel. The cats must not like the stuff---so it has to be good, lol Trans fluid is cheaper. marvil mystery oil claims its not as good. With this super...

    Carter carbs idle circuits

Have a dual quad 340 with two 500 Carters. The carbs were nos back last Fall. My motor used to have a 220 @ .050 cam but now has a Crane 226-230 @ .050 cam. Got a 10 inch converter so no problems idling in gear. However it has a sight hisation from off idle if I go to take off quick--part...

Gerotor electric fuel pump, any good?

I'm cheap,I made my funnel by cutting the top off an old gear lube bottle..has a nice little spout were if you cut it right at the tip its too small for gear oil but great for fuel 8)

How many CFM for my 340?

Yes the 750 would let the motor breathe better on top but why not try this / wait until you swap the 3.91 rear end and put an open 1/2 inch spacer and see how it is...have you messed around jetting the carb at all...they are set up close but I would try 1 or 2 steps richer and see if its any...

How many CFM for my 340?

Nice car and with an overdrive trans, cool. Your car is light weight and 340's love to rev if built right...any carb would work on it..even an 850 holley but I am finding out that the Edelbrock-Carter carbs like stop and go traffic better and think my Holley days are over with (but I'm...

Intake cross over blockage or not ?

Bump an old thread but I ran intakes both ways up here in cool weather Michigan. Having the exhaust heat passages OPEN are the way to go. At night during WOT the intake will get cold even driving it ALL night. I found at night time and cool weather a heated intake will make MORE power--not less...

    Idles rough in gear

Don't think this is it with a small cam but if theres like a 10.5 power valve and once in gear the motor's vacuum drops below that point, the power valve will open. You may want to put a new power valve in it, 6.5 is good, maybe 8.5

    Right Carb for my 340

Well I put on a AVS from a 1969 383 motor manual trans from Calf.--I love E-bay--needed a accel pump and a bit of cleaning--looks very nice for 40 years old. Was hoping to improve my 10 mpg 318 motor with MP 360 heads-308's. It didn't! In fact I believe I lost 1 mpg. Ran OK--it wasn't rich, ran...

    Carb Problems...

What ? I have a Demon race 650 dp with no choke and stock jetting, my "warm up" is 20-30 seconds at 2500 rpms, then its good to go. Sure it idles rough in gear while backing out out the driveway but it doesn't stall. A few things I have learned over the many years I had carb cars. 1 the intake...

Edelbrock STR12 Dual 4 BBL Holley Carbs

Wow, another "you never know what you see on E-bay" item  This rare piece came out in 1969 and wasn't made for too long. I seen in a 1969 Hot Rod Mag. story called "Mopar Manipulatin" they got 30 hp just by switching intakes and then got a max of 450 hp @ 6700 rpms and @ 7500 the 340...

750 Mighty Demon on my 340?

Hmmm, I love all my Holleys for the last 25 years but this winter I got a Demon 650 race carb-with removable boosters-for just $315 from Jeff Gordon racing school-1 year old and with E-bay you never know what you get. This was one of the better deals. I love my Demon now. A few things are...

    Locking gas cap

I been there, had a spare set of keys-without my gas cap key on the other side of town with hardly any gas  What I did was pound a screwdriver in the key hole, then used vise-grips to turn the screwdriver. It unlocked it, just like the key, ha ha

need a holley #4778 for parts.

Proform is good but theres another--I think its procomp, that stuff is junk. E-bays loaded with it too, hear nothing bu bad talk about how bad the work is. Manifolds don't line up, etc.
