The black stuff is paint. A painted muffler is almost always made of plain steel -- no aluminising, no galvanising -- they were the cheapest grade available and as you can imagine, they melted (rusted/corroded) in the acidic, wet exhaust gas.

I guess the biggest challenge is to find a black resonator. If someone has one for sale, know someone who has one or want to trade for a stainless steel tip resonator I would be very interested.
I haven't found the first or second edition of the 1965 partsbook. There might be the changes. My three books are from May of 1966!

I found out on Ebay that Frank Mitchell has a 1966 resonator for sale. This is factory piece. It has only the DPCD logotype and the date code. That's seems to be all the info that is on the resonator.
Frank Mitchell is right next to Dave Layson on my short permanent shìtlist of people I will not aid and abet by buying from them.
"Aid and abet" is a legal term. It means to help somebody commit a criminal act(s).
During my search I have found out that the black resonators were only used for a couple of month and later switched to the stainless steel tips model. However I'm not sure exactly when then changed but probably in late 1965 production.

Today I got the rubber mounting that I wanted. The cc between the holes is 1,81" or 1 3/4". What do you guys think of the height towards the rear valance? Is it ok or should it be higher or lower?
There is a small different in size of the rear clips that goes into the frame. I took the grinder and adjusted mine. This will go on the convertible.I might start doing kits for hanging the rear resonator!

The air cleaner base showed up today. I bought it from Don (65dartman) and honestly this is the best base Iever seen. Hats of Don!
The exhaust clamp showed up as well. There is some manufacturers stampings on it but this is the real deal.

I called a Chrysler historian friend of mine and he did not know the answer to your question. I saw one of the first 273 4 barrel Barracudas at church in 1965 driven by a Chrysler executive, noticed the unique exhaust outlet but don't remember if resonator was black or shiny. I would think all the resonators were aluminized, as all the other mufflers, resonators of that era, and were painted black in the beginning for appearance sake, then the paint removed later for a cost savings. This happened/happens all the time.

It was only produced for a few months before te stainless version replaced it. I only remember the chrome-tip resonators when new, probably because the black ones wouldn't have attracted the attention of a 12 year old. I do recall seeing photos of the '65's with the black tips.
When adding up all this information I'm pretty sure that the resonators were black from start in August of 1964. Somewhere along the line they swapped to the stainless steel tip resonators. The exactly date is not known now but more pictures of factory ones, new or used on car would help alot. The earliest resonator with stainless tip I've seen is manufactured 2-66. What date code do you have on your unrestored cars?

Like one of your sources, I have a very large sample size in my memory of these cars. My first A body was in 66 when I turned 16, but it was a 273 2bbl 4speed 64 Barracuda. (I wanted a new S 67 Barracuda but had to settle for the repo 64)

Thank you so much for the story and kind words too. I enjoy getting those old stories on how it was back in the days. The man who got me on track with the black resonator was Richard Ehrenberg, tech editor on Mopar Action magazine. He told me he remember them when they were black! And that was four weeks ago. Before that I just knew that they were stainless steel tipped.
So learning is part of this trip. I've learned so much about how these cars were made, assembly technics, production changes, differences between the plants etc and I really enjoy it.

OK, the washer holding the rubber hanger for the rsonator is done. They were a little tricky! But what finish were they? I'm thinking of silver cad but mostly yellow dichromated1 Ant leads?
I found a mint used bar for the front vent window frame. I just need to polish the stainless steel.
Inside the door is the rear "bracket" were the window goes up and down. It looks like it was silver cad from the beginning but what'sinside? It is glued to the metal.
Any help is appriciated.

The vent frame is done. Took alot of polishing but now it's there.
I just need to figure out how to connect the top. The chrome frame will go to the chrome shop.

I started taking the vent window apart. All the chromed pieces needs to be rechromed. This is actually the first time ever in 32 years that I'm taken apart this parts!
All parts are in great shape except the vent window handle on the drivers side. The passenger side is absolutely mint but the drivers side is in worse shape. I guess that depends on the frequency of opening.
Does anyone have mint used drivers side vent window handle for sale?

Driver side door/window hardware gets the most wear. Best bet is to go shopping in Australia for the vent wing handle for the passenger side (left, in Australia) of an AP5, AP6, or VC Valiant.

I'm in the same situation as you on having to rechrome my vent widow and find a good handle. I talked to nosmopar.com and they supposedly have NOS in stock. $60 for drivers side (USA) and $50 for passenger side. Believe the place is out of Canada. I've never ordered from them before.

Was the vent window disassembly pretty straightforward?
I took a punch and grind it ti fit the little pin in the handle. That wqs all it took to get it out. Whatch for the plastic "ball" and the spring.
Nosmopar is located in Oroville, WA. They are great to deal with. It takes some time to get stuff though.
Perhaps we could order two sets and then split them?
The washer for the rear rubber is glass beaded and ready for shipping to US. BUT the big issue; -What finish did it have? I have checked all my books, all my magazines and all my pictures that I have. But no luck! My guess is;
1. Yellow dichromated
2. Silver zinc
3. Natural
For sure I know that the bolt was black phosphated.
Does anyone have knowledge about this? Help is very much appriciated.

The window channel made by plastic that goes with the vent window to the window hinge is in bad shape. One can probably be reusedafter some good cleaning. The other one is shot! Good news! The last vent window frame is ready. This took me way much longer time then I thought.
The U-channel on the vent window frame needs to be replaced. The question is where do they sell them? I'm also interested in where to find the upper rubber weatherstrip which goes underneath the chrome that goes on top on the frame. I can't recall that I ever seen one of those for sale!

The transmission guy Lars called me re missing stuff for the transmission. Most of the NOS is rounded up except the pan and the dip stick tube. The pan must be NOS but the dip stick tube can be used.
AT the pictures you'll see two of them. The rightone is the factory one from my car. The other one is for a 1966 Dart. But if you look at the pictures you see some differences between the two. The question is;
Was there many manufacturers of the dip stick tube? Or was it a production change between 1965 and 1966. Or did I bought one from a slant six?

A friend stoped by last night and had a small piece for the bumper jack that I have been missing. Mine was molded in tan plastic but this one is molded ion grey plastic. Seems that Chrysler had more then one supplier.
After one hour of cleaning it's now back in place where it belong.
