A few months ago I bought this 1969 Barracuda from a friend of mine. I had been bugging him for a while about it, because I always thought they were neat looking cars. He eventually agreed to sell it to me, so here we are. Outside, the car is fairly clean. Has a few imperfections, but most do. Inside is pretty nice as well. But under the hood is TERRIBLE looking. The car has had a coolant leak since the day I brought it home, that has progressively gotten worse. I tightened the water pump bolts, to find two stripped bolts. The trans also has a small leak, so I've decided to pull the engine and trans, fix some issues, and give it a rattle can tune up. I've decided to leave the engine alone mechanically, aside from changing the intake, carb, and a different exhaust system. The trans has a cheetah manual valve body, and shifts firm 1-2, but has a lazy feeling 2-3 shift, so I'm dropping it off to be inspected as well. Today I got the motor and trans out, so I figured I'd post some pictures for anyone who may be interested.

The car, and some photos I took of it a couple weeks ago.

Upon tearing it out, I've decided to take care of a few other issues that scare me. The oil pan is touching the K member, so I'm going to do a little clearancing on the K member, and the fuel system is pretty scary. The new pump is mounted on the exhaust hanger, with a variety of tiny steel fuel line mixed in with a little rubber hose here and there and secured with some worm clamps. I will run braided all the way from the pump to the regulator.

And some new parts that will be going on the engine.

Stay tuned for updates as they come!!

pull the PAN and weld a 1/8 inch skid plate onto the bottom with ski tips on all 4 sides..good luck!

Don't forget the red paint when you start redoing the engine compartment.

Black engine bays are for chevy's and black Mopars.

Sweet ride BTW.

Good luck.

Thank you guys!

I know it drives me nuts too, but unfortunately it's staying black for now. We can't track down what shade of red this car is to match it. It was originally Sunfire yellow, and I plan to paint it back to that in a year or two. So for now it's just going to stay black. When I go through the body work next year, I'll do the engine compartment body color as it should be!

Great looking car!!!! Tell me about that new hood. What brand and where did you get it?

Thank you! It's a bolt on Hemi Super Stock hood from Glasstek. Very nice piece, can't wait to put it on.

You can clearance the motor mount stud slots on the k-frame which allows you to push the eng/trans back slightly. That will give you better header clearance with the steering linkage too....

Love the way it sits. Beautiful. Good luck & please trade for my dart.

Got the engine all cleaned up and primered. Tossed some parts on just to make sure all was good in the hood before painting and bolting everything back up.

Also washed out the engine bay before sanding and repainting.

Well said Momoparman.....

To each his own but my 2 cents is if you can afford it repaint the engine bay! That awesome car deserves it!

this is true, but I do hate it. Blue is the color for me if I ever get enough cash to repaint the whole car...but I'll have to repaint the engine bay and all the associated pain all over again. :(

Looks like Flame Red PR4, mid 90's to mid 2k's color, I have it on my Jeep and 2500.

Nice looking ride, keep at it!

Finally got off my *** and got a little bit of work done in the last couple days. Gave the engine bay a quick sand and re spray. I tried to paint it red to match, but the body color is so faded compared to the new paint it looked like ****. So purist, relax lol. It will get done correctly when I paint the car in the future.

Then I clear coated my headers with a 2000 degree clear coat. Never tried coating over bare steel before, which is much harder than it looks. For now they look killer IMO, hope the **** dont burn off first time I fire it.

Then I finally picked up the engine and brought it over to my buddies where I'm putting the engine in at.

Mounted my new trans cooler.

Then finally tonight I bolted it together and the girlfriend and I dropped it in. It's now 5am, and I've had just about all I can handle for today. Tomorrow I have to bolt up the shifter linkage, driveshaft, mufflers, and fill it with fluids and try to fire it.

that engine bay looks ok, aways thot black looked better than rust and grime!

Your doing a fine job so far Competition! With all the things you been doing with the engine and engine bay, I hope you didn't forget about the crappy fuel system you mentioned earlier. Hate to see that car go up in flames.

Yes sir. That will be addressed asap.

I kind of like the black engine compartment on this car, too much red is.....well....too much sometimes.
Sharp looking car though, glad to see so much progress.
Keep up the good work!

Did the official first fire up today since being back together and things felt good so I decided to take it out tonight. The girlfriend and I drove it around for quite a while and aside from a small issue to address it all went pretty well, and it ran great, and to my surprise brought a lot of compliments at a local cruise in. Made me feel pretty good. Had a blast!
