318 1/8 time improvement

-
Chuckwalla is about the same trip from my az house as it is from my ca house. I'll be there. Hope my buddy and his stepson make it. They have Seriously fast street cars.
Supposed to be some really fast junk there. The car I’m helping on has been in the 3.80s in the 1/8 on a prepped track. Twin turbo Pro Line deal, very serious car.

Update! I ended up swapping in a used 5.9 magnum engine, with a reground camshaft and ported the heads in my backyard! I didn’t have so much time to tune it with carb and timing curve because they were closing the drag strip in a month. But regardless I was pretty happy, was hoping for high 7s but all good.

When I first started, running 9.5 @72mph 2.180 60ft 6.236 330

Now I ran a 8.3 @82Mph 1.876 60 Ft 5.259 330

Congratulations to you!! I enjoyed reading your thread from the beginning. You've embodied the spirit of hotrodding. It brought back many memories of when I started and went like 16.xx in my 69 Charger 383. I slowly got that motor/car to run 13.0's then swapped in a 440 and went 12.50's. Same kind of progression you're doing so keep at it and have fun!!

My friends car is not finished yet, I'm sure (procharged solid block KB hemi, in a promod avenger) but his street car is a turboed ls stroker in a malibu (1200 hp) and his stepson has a mustang that has been low 4s (2000+hp).

I heard about draggy app honestly I live on a boulevard. Its like drag race city on fridays lol

Do you think a 650 or a 750 double pumper would be a better choice. I think just the switch over from a vacuum secondaries Holley 600cfm to a double pumper would help my 60ft.
I don't know what a 750dp would do for 60 ft, but I'd bet it would sure help mph!.(over a 600vs)

I've got the draggy ap on my phone, but I haven't used it yet. How fast IS a 12500lb box truck? Lol.

here’s picture of the motor currently and a idle clip

Here’s the build up on it Guess my age! I mean mileage!!

Thank You! Yeah it’s been a journey. All the help from this form and members guided me in the right direction. Seeing what I started with and what I ended with. Still tuning right now!

Update: going to be hitting the 1/4 track in June!

Did some upgrades since the last race at the 1/8 Mile
Dumped the 600 Cfm Holley and added a 3310 780CFM Vacuum Secondary Holley.

Primary:70 jets secondary:76 10.5PV quick change secondary pod with short yellow spring. Secondary metering block.

Runs awesome! I feel like I gained a lot of top end and the magnum head porting is starting to show on the mid range pulls.

Also added a driveshaft loop, a working NSS. Per NHRA Rules

I Ran a 8.3 @84 in the 1/8 mile. Any guess what it will do in the 1/4 mile?

Pomona at the Fair plex, the event is called fuel fest
When in June? I have a house about ten minutes from the Fairgrounds, and I used to drive my 11 second car to the street legals there. I had buddies who had a shop, literally across the street, drove their 10 second ford's to the street legals too.
Heading back to Cali on monday, guess I'll have to work on the 62........
What does your car look like, so I'll recognize it when I see it?

Peed off no end that Irwindale closed again, for good this time.

Its june 28th, its a maroon 67 barracuda notchback!

I heard that Irwindale is on standby from all demolition of the actual tracks. Old employees and racers are bringing evidence of the property being built on a landfill, buried old tires etc.

As you can see I’m running the 1.5 ratio rockers vs the 1.6 that would give me little more lift

My experience has been just going from a 1.5 to 1.6 ratio rocker isn’t going to be worth the cost, as I didn’t notice any real performance increase. You’d find better gains either with improved heads, or pocket porting and blending the intake and exhaust runners. Even for a 318 your cam is awfully small for the gears you’re running. But that question regarding a different cam could be a whole separate thread. As has been said many times before, it’s all part of the combination of parts.

Oh that was a post from the beginning, now I have a 5.9 magnum ported heads and a 220@ 50 duration camshaft!
Headers, rpm air gap. 750cfm Holley

Yeah, I clicked on your post at 5 o’clock this morning while I was getting ready for work. Only after I posted this, I realized there was a bunch of pages afterwards. I’ll start reading from the beginning to see if you did any work to the 318 or went straight to the 5.9?

I think he's still 318, but with 5.9 heads on it.

I could be wrong.

Thanks. I haven't read the whole thread.
I spent a few minutes reading the whole thing last night. Inspiring to see somebody put that much effort into making their car quicker through testing at the track. We used to have a really nice track, River city Raceway, that closed down. No tracks anywhere close to me

Nearest track to me is about ten minutes...... and I can't use it. Pomona, only open to class racers twice a year. Two tracks within 20 miles closed down in the last few years.
Now my nearest 1/8 mile is over a hundred, and the nearest 1/4 is almost 200, and my house is in southern California, what used to be the center of car culture.
Edit: looks like pomona is open for an event in June. $210 for a test-n-tune. WTF?!?
