318 engine 118 horsepower on dyno

-
When memory serves me right a 318 2bbl was rated 230hp gross in 1970, two years later it was rated 150hp net. :sad8:

I know because I had this very engine in my 70 Challenger (long gone...).
So the OP's engine is spot on.

I remember the magazine article,on the drag strip tests.. Mind bending, to say the least,lol.

Remember the article they did on the literally junkyard 360 they kept sprayin tryin to blow it up but never could?

Yes,I do! (92-94 Hot Rod,Duster,basic bolt ons & bottle ,IIRC)...Those articles, just stand out,for simplicity & effect. I remember a 318,however..and explodes at LACR..

Here's my bone-ish stock '73 2-bbl 318 dynorun I did 3 years ago;
Dodge Dart Dynoday

144 HP - 312 TQ

Car has dual 2-1/4" exhaust and stock exhaustmanifolds with stock mufflers. No H or X.

Since this time I've replaced the timing chainset which woke up the lower rpm quite a bit.
Recently I also changed to a 4bbl intake.

For a 360 swap, I'm currently waiting for a new mandrell bent exhaust system to arrive with X-pipe and shorty headers.
But I'm thinking to put the car on the dyno on more time with the 318 but with the new exhaust system. Just to see what nice exhaust bents, an X-pipe and shorty headers will do on this engine.

Coming back to this topic, I recently put my Dart on the dyno again.
Last time it made 145hp.
This time it made 170hp on the rear wheels.

Dodge Dart Dyno-session, revisited

Last 2 runs;

Changes were:
- Change from 2-bbl to 4-bbl intake and IMPCO 425 LPG carb.
- New timing chain set
- A number of distributor timing and advance changes and recurves.

NO changes in exhaust yet, but I have a new 2.5" exhaust at hand, with X-pipe and full length Doug's headers and Borla ProXS mufflers.
Want to find out how much this will help the 318 breathe, before it's changed for a 360 mill.
Will also try to change multiple mufflers during the session.

Will use the following:
- Dynomax 17748 (Large case) mufflers
- Borla ProXS
- Maybe: Flowmaster 40-series
- Maybe: Cherrybombs

All depends a bit how easy it will be to change the mufflers at the dyno-facility as the car's rearaxle is solidly connected to the dyno-hubs during the session.
Only the car body itself can be lifted up somewhat out of the springs.
We'll be using band clamps to be able to quickly change the mufflers, and mostlikely will omit the tailpipes as the different length mufflers will only give problems.

So safe to say you snuck another 30 ish hp out of the engine. Thats pretty cool to see on paper! Not to mention probably a bit more fun to drive!

With a relatively low power engine, every upgrade in power is easily felt, and indeed makes a noticable improvement during everyday driving.
