318 head porting for the average joe

-
I believe the MI 318 has been offloaded to yet another internet guy, Daniel Powell. He will do a fine job on the machine work, but the project is so far removed from the original intention, IF it ever gets done, it wont really prove anything meaningful.
As per Uncle Tony wasn't it supposed to be on the cheap, mods that any guy could do in his home garage with junkyard or factory parts etc.? stuff that is or was readily available and affordable. So it ends up being what it always has been, its expensive modding a 318 for any performance gains and we knew this at the outset no?

Why do you even post on a 318 thread? You obviously can't help someone simply modding a 318. Whatever works on a 340 works exactly the same on a 318.

I never seen someone have such a hate on, at this point it's just hilarious.

remember when he got a "vacation" for his absolute frothing at the mouth vitriol filled posts about uncle tony? like, peeling up two, three year old threads to necro post only to share his malevolence for all?

and then he'd go back and edit them.

how magnanimous of him. i'd expect nothing less.

however, you being one of them thar ferr-nerrs may not be accustomed to our ways. the proper etiquette would be a response to propose a meeting in a neutral site-- generally an arby's parking lot, equidistant from each party. anything less is far from acceptable. and personally, i'd be insulted if not offered.

Sometimes I think people just want to ruin threads... and so they post on it like a bulletin board a bunch of unrelated or Loosely related garbage.

I started this thread under my old screen name in hopes to help people because there was not a 318 porting thread to date. 14 years later this is what people turn it into.

Work similar up here except at the Canadian Tire store aka Crap Tire, Arby's are getting few and far between up here :)

That deserves a vacation? How about a vacation for the guys who can’t do a simple search on here?

There are too many threads already about 318’s, mild street builds for “streetable” power when not one swinging dick on here can define “streetable” except by their own definition.

It’s silly really.

I’ll say this. If you are watching UTG, DV and even Nicks Garage, where the guy has never once in any video I’ve seen has EVER actually made an actual tuning change and think you are learning something are just shitting yourselves.

If you can’t bolt together a 400 hp 318 with off the shelf parts you need to do something else.

I mean, we have a sticky thread on porting the 318 head! WTF? It ports like any other head, except the fact is you can grind until you hit water and air in 500 places and it still won’t make the power of a set of 2.02 340 heads and it ain’t even close.

Or rather than porting on 318 heads, go buy a set of chicom heads and bolt them on.

Damn.

and a very good thread at that.
There are too many threads already about 318’s,
There are too many threads on small blocks and small block strokers in general.
Everyone knows big blocks are where the real power is, get real, get an Indy headed big block or you can port a 906 and put it on 451 cubes and make over 700 hp. lol
Why do a- body owners think so small :D

Ok, port your heads and build your 451. If that pig makes 630 on my dyno I’ll eat my hat.

I’ll say it again. If you are porting 318 heads it’s because you like fluffing your own fragile ego or you have no grasp on what making horsepower is about.

There's a place for the 318 head.
It can offer a great low rpm torque improvement that is useful to someone not turning more than 5500 rpm.

Right. My question is why port it? That’s the point of this thread isnt it?

It makes zero sense to even consider porting that ****.

When I started out, the guys who mentored me and who helped me would NEVER tell anyone to port that head.

The intention is to get them to flow the same stock #'s as the 1.88 360/340 heads. Very little effort... Doesn't take much and you end up with a faster/smaller port "torque' , and a better exhaust port as well. You can achieve sizable torque increases.
Roughly it looks like...130's/140 cc vs 160cc.
I think It comes down to ..what you have to work with, usage, and of course..your budget.
If someone is stuck using a 273 block cuz that's all they have or they want to keep it cuz it's original, a set of 318 heads is all you would want to use, modified or not.

Yep, let's see the 700 HP 906 head build.
Do it !
Splash zone epoxy just over $200.00 for 1/2 gallon lol

Totaly off thread but I remember the engine masters challenge in 2003.
The Mopar guys made 700+ horsepower with 470 cubes and no iron heads...

Yep its all about the heads (as we all know) guys, but lets not forget the 'daily drivers' here.
318 grocery getters with a 2 barrel carb thinking ''do I need a 4 barrel or can I do something simples''.

Its called 'BLUEPRINTING' and its lots of work for little reward.
Lets just hope that the 'WORLDS' most expensive 2 BBL 318 can actually make 300hp...:mob:

As a Poly guy I know plenty about 2 BBL 318's.
Great engines and the reason for the 59 degree LA block.

There was a time folks got excited about the humble 2BBL Poly.
But that seems to have faded again, as 'bang for your buck' is much more important!

The Hinkles did the Poly proud, and most A-Bod folks have no idea what a Poly even is...
550hp with factory iron heads...:wtf:

This is how I feel about it before dumping a bunch of money trying to ger 400 horse out of a 318 invest in a 360 and start there. There is no way a 318 guy is going to cite money when talking the price of a 360 if they are dumping it into a 318... its silly like a dog chasing its tail. 318 guys are always Uncle Tony types they know some secret for the "cheap guy" but they aren't willing to share it.

And you think that lightly ported 318 head will make the same or more power than a 1.88 valve head? No, it won’t.
