383/438 Build

Going to install the engine into a run stand very soon and do the deed. Will post videos of the progress. Decided to go ahead and start installing the Alterktion since we have been rained out from work for a few days now. Man, this thing really opens up major room in the engine bay. With all the room from the tubular K member, to no longer having torsion bars, I have decided to go ahead and have a set of custom headers built by my friend Rowdy Flanagan in Marble Falls, TX. He is on instagram, check out his pics when you have some time.

Got the car aligned, drives so good now. Really no way to describe other than it handles like a new car. I was quite amazed at the weight of the car. I drove it straight to the scales after alignment was done. Car still has all iron small block, including intake and exhaust manifolds. Huge a/c compressor, and power steering pump

Got it fired up, broken in. Going to tear it down and paint it now. Borrowed a run stand from a buddy. Thankful to run it outside of the car to shake it down.

I have hemi pan in my dart with stock k frame. Had to trim the lip but it clears. I wonder why it wouldn't clear the alterktion

Good question. I guess I am just gonna stab it and try it before taking off this brand new pan. Do you have time to snap a pic of your oil pan clearace?

Nice thread i`m about 3 months from starting my 431 build I had the weights cut down on a forged 440 crank and got cold feet on whether to us it or buy a 440 source crank its been killing me.

I started with a steel 440 crank that had been cut down. But after noticing some less than stellar machining on it, I tossed it and got a 440 Source crank. The fit and finish is so nice, it's like artwork.

Update, spoke to a two different people who told me that I went too conservative on the camshaft. The one that I originally used is 230*/236*. After hearing the same thing from two different people who are much smarter than I am. I decided to call up Comp cams and order a custom cam. It is less than $20 more than an off the shelf cam. I ordered it over the phone on Wednesday, and was holding a cam by Saturday afternoon. New duration is 240*/246*. Lift is .548"/.549", 110 lobe separation. Engine sounds much different. Idles at 1200RPM, vs 900RPM like before. Throttle response is noticeably snappier and the tone of the engine is much different when you rev it up. I will save the original cam for a future build that is coming up after this car. I have gotten very tired of waiting for the specific 5spd that was going to be in the car, and decided to order an A833 with overdrive gear set from Passon Performance today. He is going to start building it tomorrow I believe. Will be faceplated, and have aluminum housing. Next step is the headers. I am waiting for the arrival of the stainless steel header kit from Stainlessheaders.com. I will be doing a Tri Y setup similar to what is used in NASCAR/Baja. I can't wait to drive this car.

I`m curious to see if the header bends coming out of the heads will work w/ those fairly long pieces already on the flanges. It definitely wouldn`t work in mine. But duster car bodies have always looked to have bigger engine bays than my 68 fastback. Yeah I KNOW THEIR SUPPOSED TO BE ALL THE SAME , BUT ANYWAY---------------
