400 horsepower low compression 360

Got banned,,really !

That was the most boring video I have ever watched !
What a let down .

Tommy
Yes was a boring video, but 1st one I came across that showed my point, bad *** engine being able to be driven normally on the street and still be able to pin the tach once and awhile, and that engine got to be making peak power at 9,000 ish rpm’s.

IMHO, you'll never see 400HP in a stock compression 360, without lots of head work, OR aftermarket heads and then you won't have a stock compression 360 anymore. But since you asked about the low compression engine, my opinion is, you "might" see 370-375HP with good parts choices and a good valve job on the heads. I think that'd be about the ceiling for a low compression 360 with unported heads with stock valve sizes.

I built a 360 Magnum, Magnum ported the heads per write up found in this forum, Comp 512 223/227@.050 110 lsa, stock bottom, Air Gap intake port matched, 750 Eddy, 4spd, 3.91 gears, in a 67 Barracuda, don't know the HP, but it runs great, certainly doesn't disappoint. This convertible gotta weight in around 3,100lbs and is plenty spicy for me.

magnum is a different animal. factory heads are much better, there's better nominal compression numbers and quench to start with.

you can make 400 with a 5.9 pert near fallin' out of bed.

but to your point, it may not even be 400 and it scoots along just fine and dandy!

That ain't your average build. How much is in your wallet build. lol
He isn't getting his fuel from the handi mart
Never said it was, I imagine there’s nothing average about an almost 1000 hp sbm, point was there’s some saying over 300-350 hp and 5,000 rpm’s is pointless on the street which maybe true for them it’s obviously not true for everyone.

Especially the 5,000 rpm part, mods just don’t add to the power curve over 5,000 rpm’s like some imply (AJ :) ) it generally adds down low too, a 500 hp engine generally makes 400 hp at a lower rpm than a engine that peaks at 400 hp and 300 hp lower than a 300 hp engine will.

I don’t think his goal is to necessarily to build a 400 hp low cr engine just to build off a stock low cr short block, imagine he’d be ok if it end up with 9-9.5+ cr with aftermarket heads.

I got no problem rolling down the highway with the 451 @ 4000rpm, it sounds good, much better than rap or pop.
It rattles the windows on main street just off idle.

yeah, that pretty much sums it up.

understatement of the year
The thing that struck me the most about that guy was, he let other people build his stuff. He was always actin like he had money fallin outta his butthole.....which is fine. I'm glad somebody does. His attitude was absolutely horrible, though.

Im really leaning toward after market heads because I will have to get a set of iron ones done anyways
That's a step in the right direction. AFR's with a set of Felpro 1008 head gaskets would be the way to go if your budget allows it.
EDIT: I actually meant Trick Flows, much better than the AFR heads as far as out of the box potential.

I want a 400 hp 360 built for my 64 valiant. Here is what i currently have for parts, which i would like to use.
75 block with factory pistons
Edelbrock 750 carb
Dougs headers
Factory 68-69 cast intake or torker 340 intake
Factory ignition
I am open to opinions, tips, and advice on head and cam selection
Can this goal be achieved with factory dished pistons?
Thank you
A 75 360 should have a 9:1 compression ratio. Closed chambered heads and a reasonable head gasket should get you to 9.5:1 or better.

I think not!

1975 360 usually has 1.576 compression height pistons that put the pistons .111 below deck for 23 cc's. Add in a 7.5 cc dish and 68 cc chambers (if you're lucky!) with a 4.14 bore plus a .040 head gasket (11.25 cc's) makes a total chamber volume of near 110 cc's. You'll be flying if you have 7.8:1. Add on some trick flows with the 1008 gaskets and you'll have 8.5:1. Use some Mr. Gasket 1121G head gaskets (4.14X.028) and you'll have 8.68:1. If you're lucky and your pistons don't have a dish (high performance 360 E58 four barrel), You'll get 9.2:1. That would get you into your 400 hp number pretty easily with the right cam. Being you'd need adjustable rockers, get this solid flat tappet with the Trick Flow Heads set with the hydraulic roller springs. CLE4N 225/235 DUR@.050, 540/550, 114LC, 2500-6800 Cam & Lifters

I'm seeing some odd comments about Nicks Garage videos lately. For the record i think his dynos are realistic
and very helpful..He has a lifetime of building and racing early musclecars.
