$50 Craigslist 360 EXTREME budget rebuild??

Wait a minute, if I have the main caps all loose and I turn the crank - it wouldn't push the crank up out?
You're just removing the torque of the main cap bolts so that the seal gets a little bit of play so it can slide.

Well I think I'm trying both ideas kind of but if I can just take the rear main cap off and it comes out nicely which I think it's probably been changed before in the last rebuild I would have hoped. Then I can just do one by one with the two and four caps. One little bit of resistance from that seal and I'm going to loosen all the main caps.
I removed the original "felp" seal on my 318 last spring :D
Anyways, I've done it several times, and if it doesn't work, your doing it wrong :D

This is why I mentioned the right stuff

Cool!
Some guys can write 5 word and you get it............I'm not that guy:D

As far as the freeze plugs sealant goes. I used Permatex Form a Gasket Sealant #1 It sealed up a freeze plug that was way pitted.
Pitted so bad the a rubber freeze and stop leak:rolleyes: wouldn't seal it, but a new freeze plug and the permatex has fix it. Thats why i said i will never install another one without it.

Well I looked up torque specs for the heads and the 318 it's supposed to be 85 pounds and the 340 and 360 is 95 pounds but I'm putting 360 heads on a 318 that have been shaved .050 . I guess we'll get to that argument when it gets here LOL

Original rope seal! NOW THERE WAS SOME FUN!!!!!!
yeah, LOL...... not too bad, though. I wasn't sure when the rope seals were discontinued, but my motor had it and it's a '76 motor

Im just really:poke: but.....if you use the 360 bolts torque to 95 if you use the 318 bolts torque to 85 pounds:)

...........Because of the higher compression........... and 360 bolts......95 of course:poke:

BAZINGA!!
Found an oil pump gasket. It's a little thin? Remember back when this thread was starting someone was saying they're hard to find and I was just looking through my gaskets for one that I could hack up into something I could use or at least make the decision that I need to get some gasket material and I stumbled upon this? I think I'll try and trace it if I ever need to make a new I have a pattern.
It's just weird how thin it is and of course it's a little beat up but still usable.

Are you using the original oil pump?

I don't know about the original pump but the one that was on the 318.?
If your using the original oil pump, and there was no gasket, you don't need a gasket. IF there is a question on the mating surface/ or different oil pump, I use a gasket with shellac (indian head).

It did have a gasket before and I was going to be glad to take the rear main cap off so I can clean it up. I'll likely just use that ultra thin gasket And an ultra-thin swipe of Right Stuff. Probably a small swipe of Right Stuff on the freeze plugs and like I was saying probably on everything.

I love that stuff, permatex 1. Good stuff for sealing up pitted cast iron.

everyone has their favorite, and many ways work with success. I was steered when I was a teenager by one of the best engine builders I've known (long past) to use the Ultra grey permatex. Been using it over the years, and never had it fail.

Roger Dodger that!
like i said, will never put another freeze plug in without it!!!

Not to go off in left field here again... but, Remember when Guitar Jones lost oil pressure on his new motor and found that a piece of the oil pump gasket had blew out?!.
They say (i know you hate them words:)) that it cam from the factory with a metal to metal seal on the oil pump.
For the record, i found one in my kit and used it on my 408. However, my 15 year onld 340 that i pull out, did not get a gasket between the pump and cap.

Just something else to chew on.:drama::D

Don't recall ever using one myself. Have been told they can spit out.... but if I was.... I'd use shellac and glue it opposed to rtv.

Never used the ultra grey. if it's anything like the grey case sealants cycles use it's pretty incredible stuff.

Agree on not using rtv.(right stuff is just a bad *** RTV) if the slightest amount gets squeezed into the oil passageway.......eventually, it will break off and could end up in the pressure relief valve causing low pressure at idle.

on oil pumps, I will only use shellac (indian head gasket maker).

Sorry, I forgot to post this, when I told you I would.
This is the only source that I have found to buy individual oil pump gaskets.

Okay got all my honey dues over went to Costco and bought more paper towels because this cleaning process never stops. Here's a couple pictures as it sits right now and will check in this evening with any progress I make today. And definitely have to clean the gasket off of both the oil pump and the rear main cap so obviously I want to put a gasket back in there if one was used before. It's an ultra thin gasket and I'm going to put an ultra thin Touch of my favorite sealant on there like I did on my Stroker motor I put it everywhere. I guess except for the freeze plugs because the shop put those in it does not leak one single drop in the last 2 years plus- knock on wood- thank you Lord.
